“Emma. Don’t walk away from me. We’re only having a discussion.”

I hear him following me down the hall, and I whip around, almost bumping into Jordan and knocking myself off balance. He grabs my arms to steady me, and I wrench out of his grip. He once again reaches for me and pulls me against his body, cradling my head against his chest.

“Fuck you, Jordan. How could you think so ill of me? You think I would do something so horrible as to get pregnant on purpose?” I mumble into his shirt.

“No, I know you would never do it on purpose. But things happen. I just want to be sure.”

“Sure of what?”

“Sure, you would be okay if you got pregnant. If an accident happened.”

“An accident won’t happen. I’m careful and take my pills religiously. I’ve been taking them for ten years. I have a schedule.”

“Please don’t be angry with me. I came back here to spend time with you, and it's being wasted by a silly argument.”

He lets me go, and I look up into his blue eyes. I see the plea in them for me to forgive him.

“I’m not angry with you. How was your day so far? Any progress?”

“I have one more sticking point to work through. Once that’s done, contracts will be signed, and I’ll be back here to you. I hope before three.”

Jordan glances at his watch, “Have you eaten today?”

“Not really. I’m not hungry yet.”

“We only had cheese and vegetables last night. You must eat something. The refrigerator is stocked with food. I have tuna and shrimp salad. I even have a container of fruit salad.”

“How do you know I like fruit salad?”

“It was on the bill for Avalon that I signed.”

“Oh,” I didn’t know he paid for my breakfast. I thought it was included in the amenities for the building.

“Doll, come, sit with me, at least.”

“Why do you call me doll all the time?”

“My father called my mother doll. You remind me of one, flawless skin, beautiful figure, long eyelashes, big green eyes, full lips, and that’s just on the outside. The inside is just as enticing.”

My face heats with embarrassment. Jordan says things to me that no other man has ever said to me before. Even Leo, when he was trying to get in my pants.

“You’re adorable when you blush.”

He sits me at the kitchen counter then takes several containers of food out—tuna salad, fruit salad, hummus, cubed cheese, grape tomatoes, pita chips, and crackers. Jordan is at home in the kitchen and takes out small plates, silverware, and napkins then sits down next to me. He dishes some tuna and cheese on his plate. All of a sudden, I’m hungry, and I take fruit salad with a few pieces of cheese. He smiles at me as he puts a forkful of tuna in his mouth.

“See, I knew you were hungry.”

We chat during our meal, and I tell him that I spoke to Nathaniel. He’s going to Europe for a tour, and I’m sad to see him go.

“So, you’ll be all alone in your apartment for two months?”

“Yes, unless Nate comes back early.”

“You should find a better place. One with a doorman. I’d feel better.”

“I can’t afford that, and I rather like the place I live in. The rent is controlled, and the neighborhood is safe.”

“But what if someone lets in an unsavory person?”
