“I know his driver, Albert. You went in, and fifteen minutes later, you came out looking dazed. My brother affects women.”

“Were you spying on me?”

“Not at all. I just happened to notice when I came downstairs. I’m just warning you to be careful. It’s easy to fall for Jordan, but he’s no good when it comes to cultivating personal relationships with women.”

“Why do you care? You dislike me from the minute you got here.”

Nicky laughs, “Quite the contrary. I like and appreciate the work you do.”

“Then why so nasty? Why did I have to threaten you?”

“Previously, I found that being nice gets you nowhere. A firm hand is a better choice.”

“Nicky, firm hand is one thing. You’ve been insulting at times.”

“I’m sorry. I hope you can forgive me.”

“It’s forgotten. Why is Jordan no good at cultivating personal relationships?”

“His business is his priority. He won’t put things aside for you. I know this from experience.”

“It sounds like you’re a little bit jealous. He’s become successful on his own while you’ve had to find it through your father.”

“I’m not jealous. I don’t have Jordan’s drive. He wanted to be filthy rich, and he got it. But his life lacks certain personal touches like someone to share it with. If you’re hoping to be that person, don’t count on it. I just want to save you the heartache.”

My chest feels heavy as Nicky continues to talk about Jordan’s shortcomings in affairs of the heart. It scares me because the last thing I need is another heartbreak.

“Thanks for your concern, but I think I can handle it.”

“If you ever need to talk, I’m here. I understand how he is.”

“I have to go.”

“Emma, just be careful is all I’m saying.”

I nod as I get up from the chair and turn to walk out the door. My stomach is roiling with the information Nicky just gave me. I’m seeing first hand that Jordan will put me second to his business even though he’s stated differently. I should just get out now. It’s only been a week since my fated meeting with him at Haze. I’m not paying attention when I walk out of the building and head past the limo sitting curbside.

“Miss Stanford?”

I turn to see Albert standing in front of the driver’s door.

“Hi, Albert. What can I do for you?”

“Mr. Grayson would like to speak to you.”

“Just tell him that I think it’s better we don’t see each other.”

“Why don’t you tell me that yourself?”

I notice that Jordan has stepped out of the back of the limo, and he’s standing there with a stern look on his face.

“You’ve heard me say it, so doesn’t need repeating.”

“Get in the car Emma. We need to talk.”

“I have to go. I have a date.”

Jordan smirks at me, reaching out to take my elbow. I don’t know why, but I feel like he’s a magnet that I can’t stop the attraction. I let him lead me into the car. I sit on the bench seat opposite him, glaring.
