Page 135 of When We Were Us

"I love you," he whispered, his voice filled with emotion.

"I love you too," I replied, my heart swelling with the truth of those words.

Oliver slipped out of me just as Vlad’s voice came over the intercom, letting us know we were almost to our home. I sat up, looking at the thick wooded areas that lined the road which was typical of Putnam Valley. It was peaceful and quiet, just what I needed to calm my frayed nerves.

We arrived a few minutes later after I tried to clean myself with napkins that were from the hidden bar. It did little to clean the stickiness from my thighs. I decided to wait until we were in the house. I opened the window as Vlad pulled up to an iron gate with a keypad. He punched in a code and the two doors started to retract.

Vlad pulled up a newly paved driveway. I could smell the tar from the fresh asphalt. The house was large but regardless of what I said, it was what my husband wanted. More was always better, and I assumed he was planning for the future when we would have little ones.

The house was a large light gray colonial with black shutters and a large white porch in the front. Above it was a small white balcony with French doors leading to it.

“Is that the master bedroom?”

Oliver looked out my window as we pulled in front of the large wooden and frosted glass double doors. “No, it’s the upstairs library. The master faces the lake. It also has a balcony big enough for a couple of chairs.”

“That sounds lovely.”

Vlad parked in front and opened the door for us to step out. There was a small lawn that flanked the brick walkway that led up to the porch. Azaleas in shade of pink and white bloomed along the front of the house. Colorful sedum and succulents were planted in a rock garden near the side of the house.

Oliver took my hand to lead me into our home. Two wooden rocking chairs with black and white striped cushions sat on the porch and in the corner was a swing suspended by two chains.

“Perfect. I can’t wait to sit out here at night.”

“You might change your mind when you see the back.”

The lock on the door was a keypad and Oliver punched in a code. I heard it click and he turned the brass door handle. The foyer was open and airy and light wooden floors swept through the rest of the first floor. He showed me the kitchen with gleaming stainless-steel appliances and beige granite. A large fieldstone fireplace was opposite the island with a flat screen television above it.

Oliver took me to the other rooms which consisted of an office with walls of dark wood bookcases and a large mahogany desk, a sitting room off the kitchen, a large den and a media room with an oversized white screen at the front. Upstairs were six bedrooms and seven baths with the master at the end of the hall. Oliver led me down the ivory painted hallway, our shoes slapping against the light hardwood.

He pushed open the bedroom door to reveal a massive space bigger than ours at the penthouse. On one side of the room was an oversized bed with a thick mattress. The bedding was light blue with matching curtains over the wall of three French doors that led out to our own private balcony.

“My color,” I said with a smile.

Oliver grinned with pride. “My dear Ryleigh, I know you. Did I do well?”

“You did better than well. Makes me want to drop to my knees and reward you.”

Oliver groaned. “You want to spend this beautiful day in bed?”

“Maybe later. I like the dresser and armoire,” I said gesturing to the heavy honey colored furniture. The two nightstands were of the same style. The headboard over our bed was padded and royal blue to match the area rug below our feet.

“Let me show you the bathroom.”

I followed him through the white double doors to find a large glass enclosed shower with white tile, an egg-shaped tub big enough for four and a beige granite counter with black striations on which two glass bowl sinks sat upon.

“I love the tub. Will I find lime basil bath beads in the closet?” I asked.

“You will. I’ve included everything you like. I would love to show you the property.”

I walked out of the bathroom and popped open one of the French doors that led to the terrace. Down below I saw Vlad, Brenda and Tino, one of our new agents scanning the property just beyond the large rectangular inground pool. The lake was just down a wide expanse of green lawn. I could see the small yellow sand beach and dock that jutted out into the dark lake. A medium sized gray shed stood near the property line of our neighbor.

“This is incredible. What’s in the shed?” I asked, looking around our new lake house with excitement.

“Boats,” Oliver replied with a grin.

I quirked an eyebrow. “Boats? What kind?”

“A couple of kayaks and paddleboards.”
