“Sweetheart,” he said to her. “We’ve been around, you know, here and there. I took Austin to experience the hot springs.”

Her eyes widened when she looked at me. “They’re fantastic, aren’t they?”

I nodded. “I’ve been all over the world, but it was the best experience of my life.”

“Did you see the monkeys? They are so adorable. And the flowers!”

I smiled as Greer chuckled. “Yes, they were incredible. He showed me the shampoo plant.”

Daniel walked up and wrapped his arm around his girl. “Hey, babe, the minister is here and wanted to meet us.”

“Oh okay,” she said, then turned to us. “I want to talk more. Greer says you’re a scuba diver from your time in the SEALS. There’s a cool protected reef we can scuba.”

“Sounds good,” I said, wrapping my arm around my husband. “Let’s talk after dinner. I’ll tell you about the nurse shark that wouldn’t leave me alone in the Great Barrier Reef.”

Her eyes widened. “No way! Okay, after dinner.”

Daniel pulled her away as Greer hugged me. “Seems like you’re a hit with your new niece.”

“New niece? What new niece?” Fisher asked from behind us. “And why are you two wearing rings?”

Leave it to his precocious nephew to spot them.

“Hey, Fish. Uhh,” he stumbled before I took over.

“Dude,” I said, looking around. “Can you keep a secret?”

Fisher’s eyes widened as a grin took over his face. “Yeah. No problem.”

“Good, because I know thirty ways to kill a person and make it look like an accident,” I teased, watching all the color drain from his face.

“God damn, Austin,” Greer laughed, turning to his nephew. “Fish, he’s kidding. He was a SEAL.”

The teenager’s head bobbed up and down as he eyed me warily. I couldn’t have him scared of me.

“Look man, I’m teasing.” I looked around again to make sure we were alone before I told him. “We got married yesterday, but we’re keeping quiet because we don’t want to steal the spotlight from your sister. And if you can help us out, I’ll go surfing with you tomorrow morning.”

The kid’s eyes lit up. “Gnarly, dude. Congratulations! When I saw you two looking all moony-eyed and sucking face, I thought something might be going on.”

Greer laughed and put his hand on his nephew’s shoulder. “Thanks, Fish. We’re really happy.”

He snorted. “Duh. It’s obs, Unc.”

I liked that kid. A lot.

“So, do we have a deal?” I asked, holding out my hand to shake.

Fisher reached for mine with a grin. “Deal. Semper Fi, dude,” he added before walking away.

I laughed and shook my head as he loped out onto the veranda. “Should we tell him that’s a Marine motto, not Navy?”

Greer’s smile was breathtaking. “Someday, but I don’t think it matters. He’s got our back.”

CHAPTER 29

GREER

The pool deck was aglow with white lights that trailed across the bridge of my pool as the sun went down over the Pacific. Guests were seated along the sides as colorful flower petals floated on top of the water in uniquely crafted clear trays and intermingled with floating candles.
