Half an hour later, exhausted from the longest yet best day of our lives, we passed out in our bed. I held Greer in my arms, his head on my chest, as the sounds of flowing hot springs outside lulled us to sleep.

When I woke the next morning, my heart was pounding. I looked down at my hand, fearful I’d dreamed it all. But Greer’s arm was draped over me, and his body was pressed to mine, chasing away my fear.

Years after that night in Chicago, I used to have nightmares about going to him and making things right when I got home. But most of the time, I was too late. He’d be happily married to another man, effectively crushing me again. And when my mind really got carried away, the dreams got worse. I’d get home to find out he’d died without knowing how much I loved him. Regret grew into a rage and became a blinding pain that would fill me and take me to my knees.

I knew what Greer meant when he said it was over, because I’d felt every bit of that agony too.

Turning, I found him blinking at me with a sleepy, sexy smile and a head full of messed-up, wavy hair. He’d never looked more handsome.

“Good morning,” he croaked, kissing my bare shoulder.

“Good morning, sweetheart,” I said, pulling him to me.

My accelerated heart rate began to slow with every breath he took, and I released a heavy sigh.

Greer tilted his head to look at me. “Are you okay?”

I looked into his worried eyes and kissed him. “I’ve never been better in my entire life. I’d happily stay right here in the bed with you forever, but I’m hungry. We should probably get breakfast, then head back.”

Before he could respond, the Imperial March sounded from his phone. I laughed as he sighed and rolled onto his back. I got onto one elbow and looked down at him, where he’d thrown his arm over his eyes.

“The Sith Lord is calling.”

“I know,” he groaned. “But I’m not answering it. She gets on my nerves sometimes.”

I laughed at the always politically correct man, who never had a bad word to say about anyone, and fell deeper in love with him—if it were possible.

“You better not let her know that,” I said, kissing his chest.

He shrugged. “I’m not perfect by any means. And I’m not scared of her.”

“It’s okay, babe. You’ve got me to protect you. Let’s shower and go have some fun with good old Katherine.”

Greer sat up as I climbed out of bed, naked as the day I was born. The sheet dropped low into his lap as he stretched his arms above his head. His chest was perfectly sculpted and the hint of pubic hair showing from behind the sheet turned me the fuck on.

He caught me staring and raised one eyebrow. I sprang forward and hopped back onto the bed—and him.

“On second thought, let’s just stay right here a little longer.” My lips found his as he wrapped his arms around me, and we lost ourselves in each other one more time.

CHAPTER 27

GREER

We pulled up to the house right after lunch to find a bevy of cars and work trucks in the driveway. Austin reached up, and pushed the button to open the garage door, parking the car in the third bay.

“I thought you said this was supposed to be a small wedding?”

I sighed. “It is. I’m sure this is the event planner’s crew.”

As I reached to open the door, he extended his hand to stop me. “Hey. What’s our plan? When are we going to tell them?”

I sat back and shifted toward him. “I would happily go in right now and announce it to everyone, but I don’t want to draw any attention from Elizabeth. She deserves all the bridal accolades. So maybe we wait until after the wedding to announce our news.”

Reaching into the back seat, I picked up the brown envelope that held our marriage certificate from the resort.

Austin eyed it and nodded. “What about our rings? I really don’t want to take them off. Ever.” I looked down to where he twisted it around his finger. I hated the look of disappointment on his face.

I loved how the simple gold band symbolized so much to him. Reaching over, I took his left hand in mine and kissed his palm over his ring before meeting his eyes. The softness he dared to show made me love him even more. “Then we won’t. We’ll keep them on, and maybe no one will notice.”
