“Holy crap,” Ezra exclaimed.

“Yeah, and then Jacob’s team scaled that fucker like a kid in a candy store. They blew the door off that plane and charged in to grab Marissa. Rage and Hawthorne’s might as well have had movie tickets for all the help they were able to give,” Leila added with a dark chuckle.

“Sorry to have missed it,” Lowrider commented as he sat down beside me.

I peeked up at Lowrider from Ezra’s chest.

“Hey, pretty lady.” Lowrider winked, and Ezra growled.

“Go flirt with your own wife,” Ezra grumbled.

“You okay?” Lowrider asked, peering into my eyes and ignoring Ezra.

“No,” I replied honestly.

“Not surprised, but you survived, Dana, and that’s all that matters.”

“Damn straight,” Lex declared, joining us.

“Thanks for getting here so quickly,” Ezra said to Chance.

“Easy enough when we were round the corner. Although hearing those blasts fuckin’ rocked me a bit, I don’t mind saying. But there Dana was, your woman, shooting over her head like a pro, and she’d hit two of the fuckers,” Chance spoke to Ezra.

“This will fuck with her right on top of the cabin incident,” Chatter said. “See Dana gets in with Janet.”

“Good idea,” Ezra agreed.

I didn’t care, I just shut them out and retreated to my own little world, which consisted of Ezra and myself.

Ezra

Ezra was shaking as he dashed up the stairs. As they arrived at the parking lot at Hawthorne’s, he could hear blasts rocking the building. The door between the car park and stairs was shot, and the lock was removed. Ezra didn’t hesitate as he ran full out and barrelled through the hole in the entrance.

The state of the offices made him pause as he looked around in horror, and then Ezra spotted Dana clinging to Chance like a lifeline. He raced over and snatched Dana up close. A quick check reassured him that she was uninjured and alive.

Ezra’s body relaxed as he sat with Dana in his arms, content to know she was safe. He watched as she listened to the conversation around them, and he recognised when she tuned out.

Her eyes fluttered closed, and she sighed.

“How close was it?” Ezra demanded in a low voice.

Chance peered at Dana before answering. “Too damn close. On both counts. They’d gotten Marissa into a plane, and they’d breached the offices and had the panic room door open. Dana wasn’t planning to go quietly; she was firing over the desk blindly, which allowed us to take them from behind. But it was close, Ezra, on both counts.”

“This shit has to stop,” Ezra muttered.

“Agreed. But until we find where that cunt is hiding out, our hands are tied. Fury’s bringing the war to us, which is fine. On our turf, we’re stronger. But Fury attacks randomly and with no rhyme or reason. The asshole is all over the place. He sends in weaker teams because he’s ridding himself of the chaff. And even though they are weak, they’re strong enough to cause chaos. And we still don’t have a fuckin’ number for the amount of men he’s got,” Chance said.

Chance ran a hand through his hair, and Ezra noted how tired he looked.

“Is Clio okay?”

“Yeah. She’s kicking Hellfire’s ass and determined to make us one big family. Nobody dares say no to her after her blow-up at Thanksgiving. And that bastard dog of hers. Jesus, it causes more trouble than the kids.”

Ezra hid a smile. Calamity discovered an abandoned Great Dane puppy and offered it for adoption. It had caused mayhem at Clio’s fundraiser, and she’d tackled it head-on and forced Chance to adopt her and called her Poppy.

“Bet she takes a lot of walking.”

“Are you kidding me? I take Poppy out on the bike. Fucker is almost as fast as me. The prospects hate her because she only listens to Clio, and the kids ride her like a horse,” Chance complained.
