We cooked dinner together, our hands touching, or one of us would sneak a kiss before going back to what we’d been doing. This was heaven. The rest of the week went the same way: long loving nights, morning sex, breakfast and then off to do something. Even if it was a lazy day fishing. Together, we caught several walleye and yellow perch in the lake.

Ezra had laughed uproariously when I refused to gut and clean them. There was a tiny little hut where the facilities were for gutting the fish, and I left Ezra to it while swinging in my hammock. I needed to get these for home. Perhaps a larger one that could accommodate two.

???

Confused, an insistent beeping noise woke me out of a sound sleep. As I hazily wondered what the hell it was, Ezra leapt up and dashed out of the room naked. Bemused, I blinked and sat up in bed. Ezra came back at a jog, grabbing his jeans.

“Get dressed, we’ve got company,” Ezra said.

That was a slap to the face, and I shot up, suddenly wide awake.

“What type?”

“The unwelcome kind. There’s six men heading towards the cabin from different directions, all armed.

“Fangs?”

“Probably. How the fuck did they find us? Never mind, baby, get dressed now!”

Already out of bed, I hastily dressed in jeans and a jumper from the floor. I didn’t bother with underwear; there wasn’t time. Quickly, I slipped my feet into trainers and then moved over to my purse, where I kept my gun. I took it out and the extra clip I held in there, and Ezra nodded in approval.

“Dana, run for the lake, head for the dock with the boat. Go, baby, and don’t look back,” Ezra ordered.

“No! Ezra, I am not leaving you,” I exclaimed softly.

“Babe, if you’re still here and at risk, I’m going to be distracted. I need you to be safe so I can take them down.”

“But you’ll be alone out there,” I argued.

“Dana, I will be dead if I can’t concentrate. I’m giving us both the best option to escape this alive. I’ll meet you at the dock, I promise. But I want you to take that boat out to open water so they can’t reach you and stay low. Do not come back or wait; head for the opposite shoreline and hide. There are houses where you can call the cops. Promise you’ll get to safety,” Ezra said.

“Fine! But we haven’t finished arguing this!”

Ezra nodded, and I sprinted out the side door near the kitchen. As trained, I kept the gun loose at my waist. The dock wasn’t far, but as soon as I reached the treeline, I slowed. Who knew if somebody was heading this way? As I crept through the trees, wide awake and nervously alert, gunshots from behind made me jump. A man yelled, and I relaxed my shoulders, which had tensed up. That wasn’t Ezra shouting.

As I neared the dock, my senses tingled. There was someone here. Desperately, I searched in darkness, barely pierced by the moonlight for movement. A small part of me claimed I was being overly paranoid, but my gut screamed someone was hiding.

Anxiously, I waited several minutes as random gunshots echoed before making my move. Full out running, I dashed towards the dock and heard pounding feet. A man tackled me from behind and flipped me onto my back.

I fought hard as a huge male struggled to rip my gun from my hand. My fingers began to open, and in desperation, I jolted up and landed a headbutt. The attacker released my hand to punch me. Stunned from the headbutt and the blow, he wrestled the gun easily from me. Bad breath assaulted me as he straddled me, pinning me down. But my arms remained free.

A grin stretched his lips as he licked them.

“Gonna enjoy fucking you,” he grunted as his hand groped my breast, his fingers squeezing so hard I knew I’d have bruises.

Panicking, I punched forward and hit him in the gut, allowing me to yank a knife from my pocket. Without a second thought, I jabbed upwards and stabbed him in the throat. Horror swept over me as blood poured over my hand. The asshole made a dreadful gurgling noise and fell sideways.

Dazed, I lay there in the dim moonlight, dazed and sickened. Fuck, I’d just killed someone up close and personal. My stomach heaved, and I rolled over and retched. Once I finished being sick, I scrambled away backwards from the vomit and the dead man with his eyes open staring at me. Horrified, I wiped my hand on a pile of leaves, trying to remove the blood. A scream was lodged in my throat, but it was trapped as I struggled to breathe calmly.

I wasn’t more than ten paces from the dock, and I crab-crawled away, keeping my eyes open. Something glinted, and I spotted my weapon and grabbed it, hugging it close. Loud gunshots made me jump and spurred me into action. Terrified, I leapt to my feet and raced down the dock.

Quickly, I untied the boat and shoved it out, but I didn’t climb in. Everything screamed at me that Ezra was in danger. Deliberately breaking my promise, I headed back to the treeline and began moving silently forward. A twig snapped nearby, and I froze and twisted my head. Just to the left, I saw a big man creeping away, heading in Ezra’s direction.

My hand shook as I raised the gun and took aim. Images of the blood pouring over my hand soared into my memory, and my hand felt sticky again. A yell made me jump, followed by three shots and then a scream. That did it.

Steadying my hand, I aimed, fired, and closed my eyes on a certain headshot. When I opened them, the guy was down and unmoving. Cautiously keeping the gun aimed, I moved forward and saw he had a round bullet hole between his eyes. This was a cleaner death.

He wouldn’t be getting up again. For me, that was two dead, but I didn’t know how many were hiding. I felt on edge as I scanned the trees, searching for any sign of Ezra. Shots were fired to the left, so I crept in that direction. A hand slid across my mouth, and I struck out instinctively with an elbow.
