But not someone she can see herself with long-term.

As these worried thoughts spin through my mind, she takes this moment to settle back further against me, her ass nestling against my cock, her hands curling beneath her cheek as she snuggles down deeper.

She feels safe with me, safe in my arms.

She seems to be gaining confidence and happiness working with me, at my office, an employee of my business.

She hasn’t even asked me if or when it will be safe for her to go home.

My little secret? Her ex has been taken care of. That’s the other thing Eli told me on the phone. The night he called the front desk. He told me that the man had been found, has no interest in contacting her again, and a few broken ribs later, he magically found enough cash in his apartment to pay back her savings.

With interest.

She could have gone home then, that night at the Mark Hotel.

Or, I could have told her the coast was clear when I told her about her dad.

But I didn’t tell her because I didn’t want to let her go.

I was starting to think of her in more permanent terms. I would never have brought her here, to the family yacht, if I wasn’t. I’ve been daydreaming. Of us working together, pulling her into larger projects, maybe even having her shadow Claudia. Of us moving into my bedroom together.

And now she says…

Yours for now?

Old hurt creeps up, reminding me that even when I though a woman was mine forever, that we were going to say vows to one another to make our bond everlasting, it turned out she was only mine for a short time.

Until she decided she didn’t want to be mine anymore.

If she’s thinking the same thing.

If she’s going to just be gone one day.

Then I need to end this thing soon, first, before she can hurt me.

When we wake, sunlight streaming through the windows, she looks so peaceful that I have to lean down to kiss her cheek. Even if it’s for the last time. A slow smile stretches across her face as she feels my lips brush against her skin.

“Mmm,” she murmurs, stretching her arms. “Is it already morning?”

“Yes. Ready for a shower?” I ask.

“Yes.”

Ignoring my worry, I live in the moment, scooping her up into my arms. She wraps her arms around my neck with a giggle as I carry her into the big bathroom. I set her down on her feet, going in for a kiss.

But she pulls away.

I study her face to see why, what is wrong, but she looks away. The color slowly seems to be draining from her face, the healthy pink in her cheeks replaced by pallor.

Pressing a hand against my chest, her eyes lower further, looking at the floor.

Can she not even stand to look at me anymore?

“Is everything okay?” I ask, unable to keep the chill from my voice.

She shakes her head. “Umm… would you mind if I took a few minutes to myself?”

Maybe she wants privacy to wash after last night. I tell myself to stop worrying but I can’t. “Of course.”
