“Hello, may I speak to Janet Gibson?” It was a female speaking.

“Yes, this is her.”

“Good morning, this is Mariam, Sheikh El-Masry’s secretary.”

“Hello.” Janet sat up. Suddenly she felt nervous.

“I hope I caught you at a good time.”

“Yes, you did.”

“Great, the position that you interviewed for has been filled,” she said. Janet’s heart sank. She had expected not to get the job but hearing it hurt.

“I see; thank you for the opportunity,” she said.

“However, there is another position that opened up, and the sheikh would like to hire you for it.”

“Oh?” Optimism filled her voice.

“The sheikh needs someone to look after his six-year-old daughter. The role involves taking care of her meals, taking her to school and looking after all her other basic needs. The role does involve some housework also. It’ll require you to live in the house. The pay is $2,500 a week. Would you like to take this job?” Mariam asked.

$2,500? Janet screamed internally. “Yes, I think I would like to take the job,” she said. All she could think about was the money. She could look after her family so well with that amount.

“Great, you would be required to start immediately. Would that be okay?”

Just then, her mother and sister walked into the room. They had gone to the store to get some food.

“Ah, yes. I can be there later today. I’ll get the bus to Dallas,” Janet replied.

“That sounds great. We’ll see you later, then.”

“Yes, thank you.” Janet hung up the phone and looked at her mother, wide-eyed.

“What? Who was that?” her mother asked her. Janet ran to her mother and took her hands into hers.

“I got the job!” she cried out and started jumping.

“I told you!” Her mother smiled. She had been reassuring Janet about her interview. Janet had been so worried that she had not done well at the interview, and her mother kept telling her that there was nothing to worry about.

“I mean, it’s not the actual job that I applied for, but the salary is even better.”

“What’s this job, then?”

“I’ll be working as a nanny, looking after the sheikh’s daughter,” Janet explained. Her mother raised her eyebrows.

“That’s not an easy thing to do. It takes a lot to look after a child, especially one of a rich man. The standards of care are very different,” said her mother. Janet shrugged.

“I know, she’ll probably be spoiled. I’ll have to cater to her every need and keep her happy. The money is too good to give up the job.”

“Alright, do your best and call me if you need any advice. I have raised two children, very well too.” Her mother gloated. Janet laughed a little.

“I need to pack because they need me to start immediately.” Janet turned and went to the closet.

After packing was finished she hugged her mother and sister and then bid them farewell. She headed to the bus station and got the two o’clock bus to Dallas.

During the five-hour journey, Janet wondered what her life was going to be like. She felt guilty about having moved her family across the state because of the mess she had created. However, Janet couldn’t run away from Corpus Christi, leaving her family behind. They wouldn’t have been safe if Pablo knew that she had run away. Pablo, he was probably looking for her after she hadn’t come to work for three months and had disconnected her cell phone. She hoped that she wasn’t that valuable to him and that he would not look for her very hard.

Janet arrived at the sheikh’s house just after 8 p.m. One of the maids greeted her at the door. “Is Mariam here?” Janet asked.
