“I can’t just come with you. I don’t want to burden you,” said Esther.

“It’s not a burden,” he replied.

Esther was silent for a moment. “We’ll only come with you because Janet wanted us to move to Dallas anyway. I feel ashamed of getting help from you like this,” she said.

“There’s nothing to be ashamed of,” he said.

“Where will you take us?” she asked.

“To my home.”

Esther raised her eyebrows. “We can stay at a motel nearby,” she said.

“No, that defeats the purpose of me trying to keep you safe.”

Esther sighed. “We’ll have to trouble you then. As soon as we can, we’ll leave. Thank you for your kindness,” she said.

“It’s fine. I owe Janet for being great with my daughter.”

Esther smiled. “She has always been good with children. She’s very kind and honest,” she said.

“I know.”

“Kim, go pack your stuff,” Esther said to her daughter.

“Okay.” Kim went over to the closet and started packing her stuff.

“Will the cartel not find us at your house?” Esther asked Basil.

“They might, but they wouldn’t dare do anything to you while you are in my house.”

Esther raised her eyebrows. “You’re not into any shady business, are you? Why wouldn’t they dare?” she asked.

“Harming me will bring a lot of enemies to the cartel.” He shrugged his shoulders. He was from a powerful and wealthy family. They had connections in many parts of the world. Besides all that, Basil was prepared to protect Janet at all costs.

Chapter 14

Janet was sitting in the living room with Sanaa watching TV. Sanaa was leaning against Janet, holding her hand. Janet felt guilty over how Sanaa was cuddling her and just being so close to her when she was part of the reason that her mother died. Janet blamed herself, if she hadn’t purchased that truck then maybe Sanaa’s mother would still be alive.

The sheikh was probably upset with her. She hadn’t spoken to him since Sunday morning when she had told him everything about the cartel. He had left on a trip. Janet didn’t think he had gone on a work-related trip. He probably just wanted to be away from her.

“Janet!” She heard a squeaky voice call out. Janet whipped her head around so fast because she recognized the voice.

“Kimmie?” Janet jumped up to her feet. Her little sister ran into her arms. “How did you get here?”

“Hey, Janet.” Janet looked up and saw her mother standing in the doorway.

“Ma?” Like a little girl, Janet ran to her mother and wrapped her arms around her. She had missed her so much. It wasn’t easy for her being far away and not being able to see her.

“My sweet girl,” said her mother. She hugged Janet tightly and kissed her on the forehead. Janet stayed in her mother’s embrace for a moment. She just breathed in her sweet scent and cuddled up to her mom.

Janet pulled out of her mother’s embrace. “How did you get here?” she asked. Just before her mother could answer, the sheikh appeared in the doorway.

“Hi, Daddy!” Sanaa called out.

“Hey, habibti.” The sheikh smiled at her.

Janet looked at the sheikh. It was her first time seeing him in four days and not seeing him for that long stirred up all kinds of emotions inside her. She felt guilty for her part in his wife’s death. She didn’t like not seeing him for that long. She had gotten used to seeing him every day, even if it was for a short time. She liked being able to see him and talk to him.
