“Basil?” She raised an eyebrow. He nodded.

“Her current boss. She looks after my child.”

“Oh, what brings you over?”

“I believe we need to talk. May I come in?”

Basil walked into the small room and sat down on the sofa, next to the little girl. “You must be Kim,” he said to her with a smile.

“Who are you?” Kim asked him.

“Can I get you anything?” Esther, Janet’s mother, asked him.

“No, thank you.”

There was only a two-seater sofa in the room, so she had to get a chair from the corner of the room and bring it closer, so that it was opposite Basil. She sat down on the chair. Kim stood up from the sofa and went to stand next to her mother.

“Did Janet do something wrong?” she asked.

“No, quite the opposite. She’s been great with my girl. I’m grateful,” Basil replied.

“I see.” She smiled. “But what brings you over here?”

“Janet told me the reason why you left Corpus Christi.”

“What?” Esther gasped. She placed her hand on her heart, and the color drained from her face.

“It’s alright, I want to help,” said Basil. He tried his best to be gentle, because he could sense that Esther and Kim were scared.

“Thank you, but we’ll be fine.”

“No, you won’t. The cartel is very dangerous; you won’t be able to handle them on your own. It’s only a matter of time until they find you. I’d rather that didn’t happen.”

Esther’s eyes raced. “How do I know that you’re really Janet’s boss and not part of the cartel?” she asked. Fair question, he thought to himself.

“Janet said her boss was handthum,” said Kim. Basil couldn’t help but smile at the way she lisped the word handsome. He was also intrigued by Janet telling her family that she thought he was handsome.

“You don’t think I’m handsome?” Basil asked her.

“You are.” She covered her mouth and giggled.

“Stop it.” Esther nudged her daughter.

“You can look for me online,” said Basil. Esther didn’t say anything for a moment; she took her phone out of her pocket. She searched for Basil online. She smiled.

“I only searched Sheikh Basil since I didn’t know your last name, but you came up in the search anyway.” She put the phone down. “I’m sorry, but I have to be sure,” she said.

“I understand.”

“So, she told you about her previous job?”

“Yes, and that’s why I’m here. Those men are very dangerous. I can’t let you stay here.”

“We’ve been staying here safely. We’ll be okay,” said Esther.

“It took me less than two days to find you,” he said. With help from Tariq, he had been able to track down Esther and Kim. “I have my car outside; I’m not leaving without you both,” he added. Besides his concern for their safety, Basil didn’t want to leave them in the motel because it wasn’t a nice place to stay.

“Your daughter told me everything about the cartel. She trusted me; can you trust me too?” he asked. Esther and Kim looked at each other.
