“Yes, I did.”

“I saw.” He narrowed his gaze at her. Janet started laughing.

“And there’s nothing wrong with it, and I had fun.”

“I’m not judging.” He smiled a little.

“Yes, you are.” Janet shook her head. “Anyway, I came here to call you over. It’s time to cut the cake.”

“I have to be there?” the sheikh asked.

“Yes, and you have to sing.” Janet raised an eyebrow. “I will drag you there if I have to,” she added. The sheikh raised his eyebrows, but just as he opened his mouth to say something, one of the maids walked out of the house with the cake.

“Happy birthday to you!” Janet started singing. She turned on her heel and walked with the maid towards the children. Everyone joined in and sang for Sanaa. The sheikh followed behind Janet and stood next to her.

“Make a wish!” she said to Sanaa.

“Okay.” Sanaa closed her eyes and made her wish. She then blew out the candles. Everyone cheered her on and clapped their hands. Janet took the knife and helped Sanaa cut the first slice.

“You get to eat the cake first,” Janet said. She smiled at Sanaa and stroked her rosy cheeks. Sanaa grinned and took a fork to taste her cake. Janet cut the next slice and handed to the sheikh.

“Thank you,” he said to her.

“Is it enough, or shall I give you more?”

“Thank you for throwing this party for my baby. I haven’t seen her this happy in a while.”

Janet rubbed the sheikh’s arm. “It’s fine; I like seeing her happy,” she said. The sheikh stared at her for a moment before he smiled. His gaze made her insides melt. Janet tucked a lock of hair behind her ear shyly and looked down.

“Janet, have some cake.” Sanaa approached Janet with a slice of cake, interrupting Janet’s moment with the sheikh.

“Oh, thank you.” Janet took the cake and started eating.

The rest of the party went well. The kids played and ate. Their parents picked them up around 5 p.m. After that, Sanaa went to her room and fell asleep. She was so tired from all the running and jumping around with her friends. Janet also went down to her room and threw herself onto the bed. She was tired too.

Chapter 12

Janet opened her eyes when she heard a knock on her door. She checked the time; it was only 8 a.m. Who was looking for her at 8 a.m. on a Sunday? she wondered. If it were important, they’d call her. Before she could decide on answering or ignoring, the door opened slowly, and a small head poked through.

“Sanaa!” Janet cried out. She was shocked to see her coming to her room at such an early time. “What are you doing here?” she asked.

“I just woke up.” Sanaa rubbed her eyes. She was still wearing her nightgown. She walked over to Janet and climbed into bed with her.

“What’s happening right now?” Janet laughed. Sanaa lay down next to her and looked at her.

“The party was so fun yesterday! I’ve never been to a carnival before.”

“Really? Well, I’m glad you enjoyed it.”

“This is the first birthday without mama.”

“Aww, sweetheart.” Janet stroked Sanaa’s hair.

“We were going for lunch at some fancy hotel on Sunday, we had a reversation or something.”

“A reservation?” Janet smiled. Sanaa was so adorable.

“Yeah. Daddy couldn’t make it, so only me and mama went,” she replied. Janet wasn’t sure what Sanaa was talking about, but since it was about her mother, she wasn’t going to interrupt. “A truck just hit us.” Sanaa’s lip started quivering.
