“We’re on summer vacation now! And it’s my birthday tomorrow,” she said with so much excitement.

“It’s your birthday tomorrow? Really? I didn’t know,” Janet joked.

“Yes, you did!” Sanaa giggled. The two of them climbed into the backseat of the car.

“Let’s go for ice cream,” said Janet.

“I like ice cream.” Sanaa giggled. She looked excited.

The driver drove off and headed into town. He parked outside the ice cream parlor. Janet and Sanaa got out of the car and quickly went into the shop. “What would you like?” Janet asked Sanaa. The shop served a range of flavors and different desserts.

“I want vanilla ice cream with chocolate sprinkles and macaroons and marshmallows,” she said.

“That’s a weird mix; you don’t want to get a tummy ache,” Janet replied as she laughed softly.

“No, I won’t.” Sanaa giggled.

Janet used the card the sheikh had left her to buy ice cream for Sanaa and herself. They went to sit outside the shop and started eating their ice cream. Janet had gotten cookies and cream flavored ice cream.

“I used to eat ice cream with mama,” said Sanaa. Janet looked at her. “She liked eating macaroons with ice cream.”

“Did she?” Janet smiled. Sanaa put her ice cream down on the table.

“I was with her.”

“You were with her, when?”

“When she died.” Sanaa had so much sadness in her eyes as she spoke. “There was so much blood.” Tears rolled down her cheeks.

“You poor thing.”

Sanaa started sniffling and trying to fight the tears, but she was losing. Janet pulled Sanaa into her arms and gently stroked her back. It was sad for her to see Sanaa like that. Though Sanaa was starting to talk about her mother’s death, it was tough for her. Janet could see her struggling to talk about it. She figured that Sanaa was traumatized by her mother’s death, and that was why she stopped speaking.

“Let’s go home,” Janet said. She picked up Sanaa and carried her back to the car. As she was walking to the car, she noticed a brown-skinned man dressed in black, smoking and leaning against a black Camaro in the parking lot. The man looked up and stared at Janet. His dark gaze made her shiver. He watched her walking to the car, it made her nervous.

Janet opened the backseat car door and put Sanaa in the car first. She buckled the seatbelt and then walked around the car and got in from the other side. The driver got the car engine started and drove off.

As they were turning into the road that led to the sheikh’s house, Janet noticed a black Camaro behind them. The car was behind them until they almost reached the sheikh’s house and finally drove past them. Janet wondered if they were followed.

The security guard opened the gate for them when they arrived at the sheikh’s house. They drove up the long driveway and parked just outside the house. Sanaa and Janet got out of the car and got into the house. While Sanaa went up to her room to get changed out of her uniform, Janet went to talk to Ruth.

“Is the sheikh back yet?” she asked her.

“No, are you waiting for him?” Ruth asked.

“Yeah,” Janet nodded.

“Don’t go down that road; it won’t be good for you.”

“Huh, what road?”

“You and the sheikh.”

Janet raised an eyebrow. “Me and the sheikh?” She let out a laugh. “I don’t have any feelings for him or anything like that. I’m only waiting for him to come back because it’s Sanaa’s birthday tomorrow,” Janet explained.

“Okay.” Ruth didn’t sound convinced.

“Why wouldn’t it end well anyway?” Janet was curious why she’d said that.
