“Hello,” her little sister answered the phone instead.

“Kimmie!” Janet was so excited to hear her sister’s voice. “How are you, my darling?”

“I misth you,” she said. Kim had a little bit of a lisp, and Janet thought it was adorable. Hearing her sister’s voice made her smile.

“I miss you too.”

“When will I sthee you?”

“Soon, Kimmie.”

“One of my teeth isth wobbly. Ma saysth it’ll fall out soon.” There was so much excitement in her voice.

“Really? The baby teeth are coming out, you’re becoming a big girl,” said Janet. Kim giggled in response.

“Is that Janet?” Janet heard her mother’s voice in the background.

“Yesth,” Kim replied.

“Hello,” her mother came onto the phone.

“Hi, Ma,” Janet greeted her.

“Hi, Janet, how are you?”

“I’m fine. I just miss you guys.”

“We miss you too. How’s the job?”

Janet sighed before she replied. “Interesting,” she said.

“Why?” her mother asked.

“Sanaa is now warming up to me.” Janet hesitated before she replied.

“What happened?”

“Huh, nothing. How’s the house hunting going?”

“Don’t try to change the subject; tell me what happened.”

Janet didn’t want to tell her mother that the sheikh had fired her because she didn’t want her mother to worry. Unfortunately, her mother was already onto her. She already knew that there was something wrong.

“Um, I got fired,” she said after a long pause.

“What?” her mother spat out.

“It’s okay; I got rehired. Don’t worry; I didn’t do anything wrong.”

“Then why were you fired?”

Janet explained to her mother what happened between her and the sheikh on the patio before he fired her and how he rehired her.

“That’s a lot to take in,” said her mother. “You haven’t even worked there for a month, and all of that has happened.”

Janet laughed. “I know it’s crazy, but it’s alright. The job isn’t so bad, Sanaa is warming up to me, and the sheikh isn’t so cold towards me anymore.”

“He sounds like a hard man to please.”
