“It’s so nice to see you twice in a month,” said the queen.

“Have a seat,” the king said to them. Bassem bowed his head.

“I cannot obey your command.” He went straight to the point. There was no need to make small talk.

“What are you talking about?”

“I can’t marry Keira.”

The queen gasped and placed her hand on her heart. “But she is a great girl,” she said.

“You found her to be unsuitable?” the king asked.

“It’s not that.” Bassem cleared his throat. “I wish to marry someone else.”

The queen raised her eyebrows. “The woman Basil mentioned before?” she asked.

“Yes,” Bassem replied.

“Is she Arabic?” the king asked calmly.

“No.”

“Then no. I will not approve that marriage.”

“I told you before. She has to be Arabic,” said the queen. She shook her head.

“She is a great woman. You will love her,” said Basil.

“Did you introduce her to him?”

“He had nothing to do with this,” said Bassem.

“We can’t have the queen of Al Huddah not Arabic. Does that even make sense?” said the queen.

“If I have to marry, it has to be her,” said Bassem. The king and the queen looked at each other.

“You are trying my patience,” said the king.

“I’m sorry, Father, but I love this woman and I can’t imagine marrying someone else.”

The king picked up a cup and threw it at Bassem. Basil and the queen gasped at the same time. “Is a woman worth you disobeying me?” he shouted.

“Father, please calm down,” said Basil.

“Is she pregnant?”

“I’ve never slept with her,” said Bassem. The king rubbed the temples of his head.

“That is what has gotten you this stupid?”

“Okay, why don’t you marry Keira and then have this woman as a concubine?” the queen suggested. Basil and Bassem both looked at her as though she had lost her mind. “It’s common for kings to have concubines,” she added.

“I only want her,” said Bassem.

“A Western woman cannot be the queen,” said the king.

“I will give up the throne,” said Bassem. Basil whipped his head in Bassem’s direction.

“What?” he spat out.

“He’s gone mad,” said the king. Bassem bowed his head to the king and walked out of the room.
