Chapter 18

It felt as though there as though there was no one else but Blake and Bassem. It was strange how much this man affected her. She had known him for a very short time and yet he was having such an effect on her. She didn’t know what to say or do. Her gaze was just fixed on him. She wanted him to hold and kiss her. She wanted to know that the kiss they had shared wasn’t a mistake.

“Um, Miss Gordon?” the construction worker interrupted Blake and Bassem’s moment.

“Yes.” Blake cleared her throat and looked at him.

“Are you okay?”

“Yes, I am. I am fine.” Blake forced a smile. She was not okay.

“The sheikh was just checking up on our progress.”

“Ah.” Blake nodded. “I just came to do so myself. I was at the office. I had some paperwork to deal with.”

“I see,” Bassem replied.

“Yeah. Um, how was your trip to Al Huddah?”

“Fine.” He was being cold. Why was he being cold to her? Blake wanted to ask him but she was too much of a coward. She was scared that he would tell her that it was only one kiss and that she shouldn’t make a big deal out of it. He probably had more women.

“Good,” Blake snapped.

“Yes,” Bassem replied.

“Sheikh Sedarous,” Lenny said as he approached. “It’s good to see you again.”

“Hello Lenny.” Bassem slightly frowned. “Is that short for something?”

“Leonard, but I don’t mind Lenny.” He smiled.

“Leonard sounds better.”

Lenny laughed awkwardly. He turned his attention to Blake. “I didn’t know you were coming today.” He touched her shoulder.

“I will be coming on most days,” she said.

“Okay, I have matters to attend to,” said Bassem.

“Have a good day,” Blake said to him. She felt a little bit of anger inside of her. He was leaving without really speaking to her. There was no “it was nice to see you” or “how are you” or even a smile.

“I hope to see you soon,” said Lenny. Bassem didn’t respond. He just turned on his heel and walked off. Blake watched him walking off. He confidently strode off without a care in the world. Blake crossed her arms over her chest and pouted. Why was he being like that to her?

“Blake!” she heard Lenny call out. Blake turned and looked at him.

“What?” she snapped.

“Didn’t you hear me speaking to you?”

“No, what’s wrong?”

“Nothing is wrong. I just wanted to show you what we did yesterday and today.”

“Oh, please show me,” she replied. Lenny nodded and began walking. Blake walked off with him. Blake fished her cell phone out of her bag and took photos of their work. She liked to keep very detailed records of her projects. She scribbled a few notes down. Lenny talked to her and tried to make a few jokes but she wasn’t in the mood. All she could think about was Bassem.

“Good afternoon, sheikh,” Amina greeted Bassem as he walked past her desk. Bassem grunted in response and just kept heading to his office. There was nothing good about the afternoon.
