Chapter 3

Daniel watched Fiona as she approached him and his grandmother. She was wearing simple blue jeans, a black top and Converses. She had her curly dark-blond hair tied up into a messy ponytail. She had peach-toned skin with a few freckles. She was curvy and of average height.

“Hello.” She greeted him with a smile. Daniel did not return her smile nor did he reply to her. He turned to face his grandmother. He looked at her with a questioning glare. He wondered who Fiona was and what business she had with his grandmother.

“Fiona is your new caregiver,” his grandmother said simply. Daniel stared at his grandmother as though she had lost her mind. He had had so many caregivers and it hadn’t worked out. It was clear that he did not need one.

“I have no use for a caregiver,” said Daniel.

“I beg to differ.”

“They all leave. What is the point of hiring a new one?” Daniel sighed. He had had so many caregivers but he had not liked any one of them. He would fire them within hours or days. Some would leave of their own accord.

“How was your flight?” his grandmother asked Fiona.

“It was good, thank you,” she replied. Daniel noticed her American accent. He hadn’t had an American caregiver. He was a little intrigued. He wondered how she was going to act around him.

“I am glad to hear it. You may go and rest. I will speak to you tomorrow.”

“Sure.” Fiona nodded. She looked at Daniel. “I guess I will speak to you tomorrow also,” she said to him with a smile. Daniel just looked at her with a blank facial expression. He watched her walk out of the room with Marina.

“She seems like a lovely young lady,” said his grandmother. Daniel turned his head and looked at her.

“I really do not want another caregiver,” he said to her.

“You need one, Daniel. You need someone that will assist you with your daily tasks.”

“I can look after myself.”

His grandmother shook her head. “I disagree. There are things that you will need assistance with,” she said. Daniel shrugged his shoulders. His grandmother was clearly not going to abandon the idea of getting him a new caregiver. He was not going to quarrel with her over it. He knew that the new girl was going to quit anyway. The question was how soon was she going to leave?

Fiona opened her eyes to an unfamiliar ceiling. She blinked a couple of times before she remembered where she was. She smiled as she snuggled up in the buttery soft sheets. She had slept so well. She rolled over to her right side and took her phone from the dressing table. She yawned as she checked the time. She was to meet with Lady Agaiby in half an hour.

Fiona reluctantly got out of bed and headed for a quick shower. Afterwards, she put on a pair of blue jeans and a white T-shirt. She tied her curly hair up into a bun. She slipped into her shoes and then headed out of her bedroom. She asked one of the maids to escort her to Lady Agaiby’s quarters since she did not know the way.

Lady Agaiby was sitting at the dining table. The maids were just setting the table for breakfast. “Care to join me, dear?” Lady Agaiby said as Fiona walked in.

“Thank you,” Fiona replied as she approached her. She pulled out a chair for herself and took a seat. One of the maids brought an additional plate for Fiona. After seeing all the food being brought into the room, Fiona realized just how hungry she was.

“Did you sleep well?” Lady Agaiby asked her.

“I did, thank you.” She had slept well. The massive bed was so comfortable.

“My grandson will wake up in about an hour or so. He usually sleeps until mid-morning.” Lady Agaiby started eating. Fiona picked up her fork and started eating also. She remembered meeting her grandson the night before. He was so handsome. It was sad that such a handsome man was as difficult as his grandmother described.

“What does he normally like to eat for breakfast?” Fiona asked.

“You do not have to worry about cooking for him. He has a chef for that. You just have to take the food to him and make sure he eats.”

“Okay.” Fiona nodded. “That sounds doable.”

“He can shower and use the toilet on his own. If you hover around him too much, he will get very angry. He doesn’t want to be reminded that he can’t do most of the things he used to be able to do.”

“Yes, of course. I will try to be subtle.” Fiona could understand that it wasn’t easy for Daniel to accept his situation. It would be hard for anyone. Lady Agaiby smiled and nodded.

Fiona was escorted by one of the maids to Daniel’s quarters after breakfast. It was quite a long walk from Lady Agaiby’s quarters. Fiona was still amazed at the size of the palace. She was not going to get used to it so easily. It was quite different from her family home. If she needed to get to her brother’s room, it would take her less than a minute. They lived in a small three-bedroom house. She and her sister had to share their bedroom. Terrence had his own room but it was quite small.
