Chapter 18

Six weeks had passed since Daniel had first kissed Fiona. In those six weeks, his life had taken a turn. He had been attending all his physical therapy sessions and cabinet meetings. Thanks to Fiona, going out in public wasn’t so awful for him. She had made a positive impact in his life.

Amina had been coming to see Daniel a lot. She wanted to look after him but Daniel didn’t want her to. His mother really liked Amina and wanted it to work between Amina and Daniel.

It was about 5 a.m. when a maid from the king's quarters came to summon Daniel. Apparently the king wanted to see him urgently. He wondered why his father wanted to see him at such an early hour. When Daniel arrived at the king’s quarters, there were less guards than usual. One of the maids greeted Daniel and escorted him to the king’s office.

“Father, what has you summoning me at such an early hour?” Daniel asked as he entered his father’s office. The king’s head of security Beshoy was in the office.

“Please leave us,” the king said to his maid. The maid bowed her head to the king before she left the office. “I had Beshoy look into the accident,” he said.

“Really?” Daniel asked. He wasn’t interested. He did not want to talk about the accident. He was finally starting to accept his situation and learning how to find happiness in other things. He was finally able to leave the palace and enjoy normal things again.

“I found something,” said Beshoy.

“Speak,” said the king.

“I had a mechanic examine the car and he confirmed that the brakes had been cut off. Someone was intentionally trying to harm the prince.”

Daniel raised his eyebrows. “What?” he said. Who would try to harm him and why?

“The person that cut the brakes was a professional. It was almost undetectable.”

“I want you to find out who is behind this,” said the king. He looked furious.

“I am already on it. We checked the surveillance cameras in the garage from that day. There was a lot of footage that was erased.”

The king punched the table. “This is ridiculous!” he spat out. Daniel was just sitting there. His insides were boiling. He couldn’t believe that someone had intentionally tried to hurt him. Whoever it was, was responsible for putting Daniel in a wheelchair.

“This is too much,” Daniel mumbled.

“We were able to obtain footage from a camera across the street. There was a man that left the garage looking rather suspicious,” said Beshoy.

“What do you mean?” the king asked him.

“He arrived at the race track at 1:45 p.m. He left at 1:53 p.m. He rushed out and he had engine grease on his shirt. He ran so fast and got into a black Peugeot and drove off.”

“This is too much.” Daniel ran his hand through his hair.

“We are tracing the car registration. I will inform you if I find something.”

“You better find out who did this,” the king said to Beshoy. “I want whoever’s responsible to pay for what he did to my son.”

“I will do everything I can to find out who is behind this,” said Beshoy.

“For now, make sure no one finds out what you are doing. I don’t want the wrong person finding out and then hiding evidence.”

“Yes, your majesty.”

Now it made sense to Daniel why he had been summoned to the king’s quarters at such an early hour and why there was less security than usual. He was trying to keep everything secret.

Daniel was shocked and angry. It was all too much for him to take in. He couldn’t even guess who was malicious enough to want him dead. He wondered if the person had a personal vendetta against him or against the king.

Daniel headed over to Fiona’s quarters. She was the only person he wanted to see and talk to in that moment. He knocked on her door when he arrived.

“Who is it?” Fiona asked as she opened the door. Her eyes were barely opened. “Your highness? What are you doing here?” she asked.

“Are you going to let me in or not?” he replied. She frowned and then opened the door wider for him.
