She could not wait to get paid. There were a few days left until she got paid. She was also going to receive a bonus. Lady Agaiby had promised her a bonus for every month that she worked. Fiona also wanted to send some of her salary to her parents. She had always wanted to help them out with living expenses but she never earned enough.

Daniel’s driver jumped out of the car as Fiona walked out of the shop. He opened a door for her. “Thank you,” she said to him. She got in the car and handed Daniel his ice cream. He frowned at the plastic cup.

“You expect me to eat out of that?” he asked her.

“What is wrong with it?” she asked him.

“I don’t eat out of plastic or paper plates or cups.”

Fiona narrowed her gaze at him. He was such a snob. “I bought this with my hard-earned money. The least you could do is accept it,” she said. Daniel groaned and then took the ice cream from her.

“You haven’t worked that hard.”

“This is the money I earned back home, and yes I have worked hard. You are not that easy to look after.”

“And yet you’ve survived this long.”

Fiona tasted her ice cream. “Oh this tastes so good,” she said with her eyes closed as she savored the taste. Daniel slowly tasted his ice cream. He looked so uncomfortable, it made Fiona want to burst into laughter. He was such a snob. There was nothing wrong with eating from a plastic cup.

“What kind of jobs did you do?” he asked her.

“Waitressing, store assistant, mainly temporary positions.” Fiona ate some more of her ice cream. Daniel continued to ask questions about her previous jobs and just about her life in the Bronx. Fiona was surprised because he had never taken an interest in her.

As they drove through the city, they ate their ice cream and just talked. Fiona was glad that they had gone out for a drive. It was something different. They always stayed indoors and never got the opportunity to do anything else. Fiona was also having a good time with Daniel. They were having a decent conversation without him snapping at her or cutting her off.

Daniel and Fiona found the queen and an unfamiliar woman waiting for him in his quarters when they arrived back at the palace. The woman that was sitting at the sofas with the queen rose to her feet when Daniel and Fiona entered the room. She had long brunette hair and beautiful olive skin. She was wearing a knee-length yellow dress.

“Good afternoon, your highness.” She greeted Daniel with a bow. Daniel looked at his mother with a questioning glare.

“Hello dear, where have you been?” said the queen. “Amina and I came over to have lunch with you.”

“You should have told me earlier, how can you just turn up at my quarters with a stranger?”

“You’ve met Amina already. I do not think we can still classify her as a stranger.” The queen rose to her feet. “Let us make our way to the dining room. I had the food prepared already.”

Daniel sighed with frustration. Fiona was just standing there feeling awkward. She had bowed to the queen but she hadn’t even acknowledged the bow. Fiona left the room and went to help out in the kitchen.

Fiona headed into the dining room with the other maids. Daniel was sitting at the head of the table, as he normally did. The queen sat at his right side, and Amina was sitting opposite the queen. Fiona went ahead and served the prince as she normally did. The other maids served the queen and Amina.

“I see that you are still working here,” the queen said to Fiona.

“Yes, your highness,” Fiona replied.

“Is she doing a good job?” the queen asked her son. Daniel stared at her with a blank facial expression.

“She’s doing just fine,” he replied lazily. Fiona bowed her head and went to stand by the door with the other maids. She really hated that tradition. It was just so weird.

“Amina just started learning French.” The queen laughed. “She already speaks four languages fluently,” she added. Daniel did not respond. He just concentrated on his food. Amina smiled shyly.

“It’s no big deal,” she said.

The three of them ate their lunch. Only Amina and the queen spoke. Daniel was just responding with groans and glares. He didn’t seem interested in the conversation. Fiona and the maids went to clear the table when they were finished eating.

“Do you know, Amina often volunteered in nursing homes and hospitals?” said the queen.

Daniel sighed before he responded. “No, I did not know that,” he said.

“I am thinking of bringing her in to come and look after you.”
