Chapter 16

Fiona buckled her seat belt with a big grin on her face. She was excited to go into the city of El Saad. She hadn’t had the opportunity to go sightseeing. It was her first time being out of America, and she wanted to use the opportunity wisely. Daniel sat opposite her.

“I cannot believe you talked me into this,” he said.

“We are just going to take a drive into the city. We won’t have to get out of the car,” Fiona replied. She could see that Daniel was not ready to be out and about in public. A little push would help him get over his fears but she did not want to push him too far. She wanted to him to try something bit by bit.

“We better not,” Daniel replied.

The car engine purred as the driver turned the keys in the ignition. The car pulled out of the driveway. They drove through the large cast-iron gates and down the road. Two cars with bodyguards accompanied them.

Fiona stared out of the window. It was such a beautiful day. The weather was nice and warm. The sky was clear. There was not a single cloud in sight. It made Fiona smile. She loved great weather and good food. She felt her phone vibrate. She picked it up from her lap. It was a message from Gloria telling her to have a good time kissing the prince. Fiona smiled and frowned at the same time. Gloria was being mischievous. It was not like Fiona had told her friend that she had feelings for the prince.

“I can’t tell if you are pleased about the message or not,” said Daniel. Fiona looked up from her phone. She found his piercing green gaze fixed on her.

“Huh?” Fiona replied.

“You are smiling and frowning at the same time.”

“Oh.” Fiona laughed and put her phone down. “That was my friend Gloria, she says the oddest things.”

“And I thought it was your boyfriend.”

Fiona smiled. “I am single,” she said. She had been for a while.

“Hmm.” Daniel looked away.

Fiona studied Daniel for a while. “I suppose you don’t have a girlfriend. I have never seen anyone come around apart from your family,” she said. Daniel turned his head and looked at her with a blank facial expression.

“I don’t ever have girlfriends.”

“I doubt that you’ve been single your entire life.” Fiona wondered if Daniel had been a player before the accident. She also wondered what kind of person he was. She wanted to get to know him more.

“I don’t have girlfriends. I have acquaintances.”

“Acquaintances,” Fiona said slowly. She shook her head. “I take it that you were a playboy.”

“I was not. Women just chose to throw themselves at me.” He shrugged his shoulders. Fiona rolled her eyes and looked away. Players always said that they weren’t players, and blamed it on the women by saying that they threw themselves at them.

“Yeah right,” she said. Fiona gasped as they drove past the sea and white sand. The seaside was breathtaking. “Wow, it’s so beautiful. We should come here next time,” she said.

“Next time?” Daniel asked. Fiona nodded. “You will have to come alone.”

“Don’t be like that.” Fiona pouted at him. She wanted to go to the beach with him. It would be a good way for him to relieve stress and she actually wanted to spend time with him.

They reached El Saad city a few minutes later. The city was quite modern and beautiful. There were tall, unique buildings and clean roads. The city was not too busy which was a good thing. Fiona hated traffic and crowds. It was a change from New York. She rolled down the window and breathed in the fresh air.

Fiona gasped when she spotted an ice cream parlor. “Can we stop for ice cream?” she called out to the driver.

“Yes ma’am,” he replied.

“I am not getting out of the car,” said Daniel.

“Don’t worry, I will go out and buy some. What flavor would you like?” She was so excited because she loved ice cream and it had been a while since she had had some. She was easily excited by small things.

“I do not want any,” Daniel replied. The car parked outside the ice cream parlor. Fiona opened the car door.

“I will just get you vanilla then.” She jumped out of the car and headed to the shop. She was glad that she brought her purse with her. She had changed her dollars into El Saad currency before she left the Bronx. She hadn’t gotten the chance to spend the money since she arrived in El Saad. Fiona popped in the shop and bought two cups of vanilla ice cream with bubblegum syrup.
