“I guess I will just have to keep an eye on her.”

***

Fiona was in her quarters when one of Daniel’s maids came to call her. She told Fiona that Daniel was calling her. Fiona reluctantly put on her shoes and headed back to his quarters. A few hours had passed since his mother had walked in on her massaging Daniel.

She didn’t have any ulterior motives. She only wanted to work and save money for her education. It wasn’t so easy to deal with Daniel. He refused to eat; he was short-tempered and deliberately made her do more work. Now Fiona was going to have to deal with his mother. Things were not going to be so easy for her in the palace.

Daniel was sitting at the sofas when Fiona walked in. She approached him and bowed her head to him. “You came back,” he said to her.

“You called for me,” Fiona replied.

“Why did you leave?”

“Your mother asked me to do so.”

“Are you working for her?”

“Um…no I am not.” Fiona was confused. “Your grandmother hired me but I am meant to look after you. So technically I work for the both of you.”

“Then it is only I or my grandmother that could fire you or give you a day off.”

“Um…”

“What are you confused about?”

“Nothing.” What was wrong with him? Fiona asked herself. Fiona was surprised that he was basically telling her not to pay attention to his mother. That was very hard to do when she was the queen and Fiona was living in her palace.

She was also surprised because Daniel had not said anything when his mother was telling her off. He just sat there and watched their exchange.

“Then get to work,” Daniel said to Fiona.

“What do you need me to do?”

“Tidy my bedroom and get my dinner ready.”

“Yes sir.” Fiona headed over to his bedroom. She changed his bed sheets and covers. Then she just tidied things up. She took Daniel’s medicine and went to give it to him. He had to take his pain medication three times a day.

“What would you like to eat for dinner?” Fiona asked Daniel.

“Fish,” he replied. Fiona creased her nose. “What?” Daniel asked.

“Nothing, I’m just not a fan of fish.”

“You’re peculiar, that’s why.”

Fiona laughed a little. “What kind of fish would you like to have?” she asked.

“Mackerel,” he replied. Fiona nodded and then she went over to the kitchen. Since he had a chef, she just had to tell the chef what Daniel wanted to eat and then take the food to Daniel when it was ready.

Fiona stood by the door as Daniel ate. She found it ridiculous that she had to do that. It was weird and tedious. Fiona opened her mouth really wide as she yawned. Daniel looked up from his plate.

“You didn’t even cover your mouth,” he said.

“Oh.” Fiona laughed.

Fiona flashed him a toothy grin. She had never been much of a lady anyway. “Excuse me, I guess I am just tired. It has been a long day,” she said.

“I second that,” he replied. Fiona noticed that Daniel was starting to talk to her a little bit more. He didn’t always say the nicest things but at least he wasn’t ignoring her anymore.

“What do you want to do tomorrow?” she asked.

“Whatever I please.”

Fiona just looked away. That was not the response that she was looking for. She wanted to know beforehand if he wanted to go out or if she needed to prepare anything for him.

After Daniel was finished eating, Fiona cleared the table. “Well, this is the end of my shift,” she said to Daniel.

“Okay then,” he said in a why-are-you-telling-me tone. He shrugged his shoulders and left the room.

“Goodnight,” Fiona called out after him. He didn’t respond. He just kept going.
