“You’re a New Yorker.”

“Yes.”

“What do you do?”

“Well, I’ve been working part-time jobs.”

Daniel looked up from his newspaper. “Why? What is your future plan?” he asked her. Fiona sighed.

“I’ve been working part-time jobs so that I could save some money for college,” she said. Daniel raised his perfectly shaped dark eyebrows.

“You did not go to a university?” he asked her. Fiona shook her head.

“No.”

“So why didn’t you go?”

“It’s expensive.” She shrugged her shoulders. She wanted to go to law school but it was expensive. If she applied for a loan, that meant graduating with a huge debt. Getting a job after graduation was not exactly guaranteed either.

“I see.” Daniel ate a strawberry.

“I take it that you went to college. What did you study?”

“You should know that.”

“Should I?”

“Are you telling me that you took this job without taking the time to learn basic things about me?”

A laugh bubbled from Fiona’s throat. She hadn’t even known about El Saad. She had heard about it from Lady Agaiby for the first time but she was not going to tell Daniel that.

“I think it is more interesting to learn about someone by speaking to them,” she said.Daniel shook his head. Fiona fished her phone out of her pocket. “Fine, I will look you up now,” she said as she typed his name into the Google search box.

Fiona clicked on his Wikipedia page. “You’re thirty, I already knew that,” she said.

“And where did you learn that from?” he asked her.

‘Your grandmother.” She flashed him a grin. She kept reading about him and learned that he had graduated at the top of his class. He had studied economics at Princeton University. Fiona was impressed to learn that Daniel was a smart man. He had both good looks and brains.

“You look impressed with what you’ve discovered,” Daniel pointed out. Fiona laughed softly.

“Am I that obvious?” she asked. A small smile tugged at the corner of Daniel’s mouth.

“I am an impressive man.”

“Ohhhh, is that a smile I see?”

“What are you talking about?” The smile quickly disappeared.

“You almost smiled. Since I have been here, I haven’t seen you smile or laugh.”

“That is because there is nothing to smile about.”

Fiona raised her eyebrows at Daniel. “There is plenty to smile about,” she said. Daniel rolled his eyes and switched the television on. He retreated back into his non-friendly self. He stopped speaking to Fiona and acted as though she was not there.

After lunch, a maid came to Daniel’s quarters and told him that the king was summoning him to his quarters. Daniel reluctantly got in his wheelchair after the maid had left. Since his accident, he was not so keen about seeing people. He just wanted to stay in his quarters and not have any visitors.
