Chapter 9

“Why can’t you do anything right?” Fiona heard Daniel bark as she headed into his quarters the next morning. She crossed her eyebrows as she followed his voice quickly. She wondered just what was going on.

Fiona walked into the living room and found a maid standing in front of Daniel with her fingers laced together and her head hung low. “I am sorry, your highness,” the maid said to him.

“If you want to keep your job, then you need to be more careful,” he replied. Fiona stood a couple of feet from Daniel. She wondered what the maid had done to get her job threatened.

“Good morning,” Fiona said to Daniel.

“What is good about it?” he replied.

“What’s wrong?”

Daniel dismissed her with his hand. “Just go and make me breakfast,” he said.

“Yes sir,” Fiona replied. She grabbed the maid’s arm. “I always forget where things are in the kitchen, would you come and show me?” she asked her and pulled her along to the kitchen. She had only said that just to get the maid away from Daniel. He looked quite angry.

“Thank you,” the maid said to Fiona once they were in the kitchen.

“What happened?” Fiona asked her.

“I broke a vasewhile I was cleaning.”

Fiona’s jaw dropped open. Daniel had threatened the maid over a vase? “He was angry over a vase?” she asked. The maid nodded.

“It was an ancient vase from China. It was very expensive and rare.”

“It’s just a vase and besides it was a mistake. There was no need for him to get that angry.”

“A lot of maids have been fired over smaller matters.”

Fiona rubbed her shoulder. She was glad that she had come in when she did. However, Daniel was probably not pleased with her interrupting the conversation. Fiona sighed to herself. She could see how depressed Daniel was. He never smiled or laughed and he just lashed out at everyone over small issues. She wanted to help him but she didn’t know how. He was not going to open up to her easily.

Fiona approached the chef and asked him to make breakfast for Daniel. She sat down at the stool in the kitchen while she waited for him to finish preparing breakfast for the prince.

When the food was ready, Fiona set the dining room table. She walked through the arched doorway and headed to the living room where Daniel was. He was sitting at the sofa reading a newspaper. “Your food is ready,” she said to him.

“I’ve lost my appetite,” he said without looking up. He flipped the page.

“You must eat something.”

“I don’t have to.”

Fiona turned on her heel and left the room. She went to the kitchen and washed some grapes and strawberries. She filed a glass with water and ice. Then she returned to the living room. She put the fruits and the water on the coffee table in front of Daniel.

“You should at least have some fruits,” said Fiona. Daniel looked at the fruits and then looked at Fiona.

“I just said that I don’t have an appetite,” he said to her.

“Have some grapes.” Fiona sat down on the sofa opposite him. The last time Daniel had refused to eat breakfast, he later ate grapes and water. She hoped that he would eat the grapes and strawberries this time.

“What are you doing?” Daniel asked her.

“I am just going to sit here with you,” she replied. Daniel stared at her with a blank facial expression for a moment, then looked at his newspaper and started reading. He picked up a grape and ate it. Fiona smiled to herself. She had succeeded in making him eat something.

“Where do you live in America?” Daniel asked Fiona after a while.

“I’m from the Bronx.”
