Chapter 8

Lady Agaiby approached Daniel and Fiona. She was accompanied by a few of her maids. She was beautifully dressed in a long orange dress and simple but elegant jewelry. Fiona smiled as she sprang up to her feet.

“How are you, dear?” Lady Agaiby asked Fiona.

“I am well, thank you,” Fiona replied.

“How are things with the prince?”

Daniel turned to face Fiona and waited for her response.

“Um, I guess we are still trying to get to know each other,” she said. She turned to face Daniel and smiled at him. Daniel narrowed his gaze a little. She was an odd woman. He was definitely intrigued by her.

“We just came out for some fresh air,” Fiona added.

“Oh, I see,” Lady Agaiby replied. She looked at Daniel and then back at Fiona. She did not look convinced. Daniel had complained about every caregiver she had gotten him, and he had either fired them or they had quit. His grandmother was probably expecting to hear Fiona complain.

Lady Agaiby looked at Daniel and touched his shoulder. “How are you today, my dear?” she asked him.

“Nothing has changed; I am still in a wheelchair,” he replied. Before she could even react, Fiona gasped loudly. Daniel and Lady Agaiby both turned to face her.

“Excuse me,” she said.

“If you have something to say then spit it out,” said Daniel.

“Well, I just think that you are being rude to your grandmother. She is just concerned about how you are,” said Fiona. Daniel raised his eyebrows. “You were just as abrupt with the doctor yesterday,” she added.

“I don’t care for your opinion,” Daniel replied. He really didn’t care about her opinion. How he spoke to people was none of her business.

“You asked me to spit out whatever I wanted to say, and so I did,” she replied. He had told her so but he had not expected her to do so. However, she had spoken boldly. It was surprising. No one around him had the guts to speak to him however they wanted to.

Lady Agaiby looked at Daniel as he spoke and then looked at Fiona when she spoke. She looked rather amused at their exchange.

“If you do not like the way I address those around me, then feel free to quit,” Daniel said to Fiona.

“She has a point,” said Lady Agaiby.

“Excuse me?” Daniel looked at his grandmother as though she had lost her mind.

“You need to be watchful of the way you speak to others.”

“Mmhmm,” Fiona agreed quietly.

“Especially when you are speaking to me.”

Daniel sighed and looked away. “It is infuriating when people ask me how I am when clearly I am not fine,” he replied. Lady Agaiby touched his shoulder gently.

“I understand,” she said to him. She turned her attention to Fiona. “Bring him by my quarters for dinner tonight,” she said to her.

“I will,” Fiona replied. Lady Agaiby kissed Daniel on the crown of his head before she walked off. Her maids bowed their heads to Daniel before they followed Lady Agaiby. “Would you like to go back inside?” Fiona asked Daniel.

Daniel did not reply to her. He just pressed a button on his wheelchair and glided off. Fiona quickly followed him. She walked a few steps behind him quietly.

Even though he often snapped at her, Daniel enjoyed spending time with his grandmother. He had always been close to her. When Daniel arrived at her quarters, she gave Fiona the rest of the evening off. He watched her walking off. Her figure wasn’t so bad, he thought to himself. It was a shame she didn’t know how to dress well. She seemed to favor loose-fitting clothes and a more boyish style.

“How are things with Fiona?” Lady Agaiby asked Daniel when Fiona had left the room.
