Chapter 5

Fiona had not talked with the queen for long but she felt uneasy. The queen had stared at her with an ice-cold glare from the moment she had walked into the room. She had eyed Fiona from head to toe. Fiona had not helped the situation when she had not recognized the queen.

After walking for what felt like forever, Fiona found herself no closer to her room. She stood in a very wide hallway that led to a heavily guarded door. She placed her hands on her hips. “Argh,” she groaned. She would have asked a maid to go with her if it weren’t for the queen kicking her out.

“Is everything okay?” She heard a husky voice sound from behind her.

“Not really.” Fiona turned around. “I’m–” She stopped speaking. A tall, broad-shouldered man with black and grey hair stood in front of her. There were a lot of men with him. The man looked like a much older version of Daniel. She immediately knew that he was the king. She bowed her head to him. “Your majesty,” she said.

“Who might you be?” he asked.

“My name is Fiona. I am the crown prince’s new caregiver.”

The king raised his eyebrows and looked at her from head to toe. “Interesting,” he said. “Are you here to seek my audience?”

“Um, no sir,” Fiona replied.

“Then what are you doing here?”

“I was trying to return to my room.”

“I see.”

“I was just coming from the prince’s quarters, and somehow I ended up here.” Fiona shrugged her shoulders. The king smiled.

“You have not been acquainted with the palace yet?”

“No sir. I only came here yesterday.”

“You are American.”

“Yes.” Fiona nodded. “Lady Agaiby hired me.”

“I see.” He looked amused. He looked at one of his men. “Take her to her quarters,” he ordered.

“Yes, your majesty.” The man bowed his head to the king.

“Good luck with my son,” the king said to Fiona before he walked off.

“You need to be careful,” the man said to her after the king was gone.

“Why?” Fiona asked.

“You see that door.” He pointed to the heavily guarded door. “That leads to the king’s quarters. So this whole area is off-bounds to everyone. You cannot just come here unless you have an appointment with the king or a member of the royal family is with you or has sent you.”

“Oh, I just got lost. That’s all,” Fiona replied. The man nodded.

“I understand. I am just letting you know for future reference.” He gestured for Fiona to follow him. “I assume you are staying in Nuha wing?” he asked.

“Yes I am,” she replied. The Nuha wing was the section of the palace where the unmarried female guests stayed. She followed the king’s man to the Nuha wing. Fiona was so happy when they arrived. All that walking had taken up a lot of her energy.

She threw herself onto her bed as soon as she got in her room. She fished her phone out of her pocket and swiped the screen to unlock it. She logged on to her Skype and called Gloria.

“Hey!” Gloria answered the phone excitedly.

“Why are you so happy?” Fiona asked her.

“I just passed my driving test!”
