Chapter 1

“Eee!” Fiona gasped as she looked at the massive mansion in front of her. She looked at the confirmation letter for the interview once more to make sure that she was at the correct place. She was definitely at the right address. She was there for her interview for a caregiver position. Fiona pressed the intercom button at the gate.

“Hello.” A female voice answered the intercom.

“Good afternoon. My name is Fiona Burke. I am here for an interview,” Fiona spoke into the intercom.

“Okay. I will open the gate for you,” the female voice answered. There was a buzz. The large black iron gates opened. Fiona walked through the gates and up the driveway. A smartly dressed woman greeted her at the door.

“Hello Miss Burke,” the woman said to Fiona.

“Hello,” Fiona replied as she extended her hand for a handshake. The woman smiled as she shook her hand.

“Lady Agaiby is waiting for you. Please follow me.”

Fiona nodded and followed the woman into the house. They walked down a hallway with wooden floors. The house was quite big and beautifully decorated. Fiona had never been in such a house. She had grown up in a small three-bedroom house with cheap carpet. They headed out of the house and into a beautiful, well-kept garden.

A well-dressed elderly lady sat at the table in the garden. She wore a royal blue dress and white pearls. Her silver-streaked black hair was pinned up into a neat updo. The woman that had escorted Fiona into the house greeted the older woman with a deep bow. Fiona raised her eyebrows slightly. Why was she bowing?

“This is Fiona Burke,” she said to the older lady. She turned to look at Fiona. “This is Lady Agaiby.”

“Have a seat, Miss Burke,” Lady Agaiby said to Fiona.

“Thank you,” Fiona replied with a smile as she joined the older lady at the table.

“Can I get you anything to drink?” the woman asked Fiona.

“No, thank you,” Fiona replied. The woman nodded before she disappeared and left Fiona alone with Lady Agaiby.

“Let us get right to it,” said Lady Agaiby. “How old are you?”

“I am twenty-four years old,” Fiona replied. Lady Agaiby had a stern facial expression. She looked like a woman that didn’t tolerate any nonsense.

“Where are you from?”

“New York, the Bronx.”

“You traveled quite a bit to get here,” said Lady Agaiby.

“It wasn’t bad. It took me an hour and a half to get here,” Fiona replied. She was willing to get a job in Connecticut because it paid well. She was willing to relocate there if she needed to.

“Have you ever worked with mentally or physically disabled patients before?”

“No, I have not,” Fiona replied. “However, I have volunteered at a hospital before.”

“How long did you volunteer for?”

“I volunteered for three months but I had to stop when I found a new job. My hours didn’t allow more time for volunteering,” she said.

“You don’t have much experience. Then why are you applying for this position? I don’t like my time being wasted,” said Lady Agaiby curtly.

“In the short time that I was there, I was able to develop the necessary skills required when looking after someone,” Fiona replied. She was surprised by Lady Agaiby saying that she didn’t like having her time wasted. However, Fiona remained calm and answered.

“Such as what?”

“I was trained to perform emergency first aid. I can support a patient when moving to and from the wheelchair. I am very patient and I always do my best to help.”

“Not only do you not have experience, you also don’t have a bachelor’s degree. I need someone that has some form of higher education.”
