Chapter 4

Emma

Emma was happy when it was time to go home. Her shift had gone well, better than expected. She had had two jobs prior, and in both of them she had experienced awful first days. In her new job, things had gone well but she had fallen over in front of the sheikh. She wanted to believe that he had not seen her but he had seen her and she knew it.

Emma picked up her bag and slung it over her shoulder. The elevator doors opened and the sheikh walked out. He was so tall and handsome, Emma thought to herself. He walked with so much confidence, it was so appealing. He walked straight past her and headed for the door. It was as if he had not even seen her. Emma also headed for the exit and the parking lot.

She fished her car keys out of her bag and unlocked her car. Emma got into her car and drove off. She arrived home twenty minutes later. She dashed through the front door and headed for the living room where her sisters were watching a movie.

“Honey, I’m home!” Emma joked.

“Shhh, he is about to break up with her,” said Mia. Emma frowned.

“That was not the welcome that I was hoping for.”

“Sorry, just wait until the commercial,” said Cynthia. Emma booed her sisters as she walked out of the room and headed to the kitchen. There was a plate on the stove that her mother had left for her. Emma put it in the microwave and started it. She ran upstairs to greet her mother.

“Hey Mom, I’m home,” Emma said to her mother as she walked into her bedroom. Her mother was sitting on her bed with her laptop. She took her reading glasses off and smiled at Emma.

“How was work?” she asked her.

“It was fine.” Emma sat on her bed. “What are you doing?”

“I’m looking for jobs. I don’t know how you kids do this.” Her mother put her laptop on the nightstand and tilted her neck to the left and right.

“Do what?” Emma asked.

“Use the laptop while sitting in bed. It’s not good for your neck.” Her mother rubbed her neck. “Work is not too hard?” she asked Emma.

“No. There wasn’t much to do.”

“If it gets too hard, don’t be afraid to quit. I know how you are responsible and like to help but I don’t want you to suffer.”

“I’m okay. I’m going to eat.” Emma sprang to her feet and dashed out of the room.

Emma arrived at work on time and quickly got settled at her desk. Dania came downstairs and made sure Emma knew what she was doing. Ten minutes into her shift, there was a call for the human resources department. She confidently punched some numbers on the phone to transfer the call.

“Hello.” A deep voice answered the phone.

“Hello, this is Emma from the reception,” she said.

“What can I do for you?” Emma thought the voice sounded familiar.

“I have a Mr. Sanders on the line. He said that you were expecting his call.”

“Who is Mr. Sanders?”

Emma’s eyes flew open when she realized whose voice it was. “Sheikh Besada,” she breathed.

“Yes?” he replied.

“I am sorry. I thought I had come through to the human resources department,” she said.

“I see.”

“I’m sorry, goodbye.” Emma quickly hung up. She let out a squeak. She felt so embarrassed. Why did it have to be Sheikh Besada’s phone? Emma glared at the screen before she transferred the call. She had to make sure that she transferred it to the correct department this time.
