Chapter 9

Emma

Emma sat at her desk thinking about Kiro after he had left. She was quite confused. She had practically saved his life but he didn’t even thank her. She had not done it for gratitude, but the least he could have done was ask if she was okay. Instead he was telling her what she did was stupid.

It wasn’t too surprising that someone had tried to kidnap Kiro. He was the crown prince of El Sourial. People would always try to gain something from him. Emma wondered if they were going to try again. She sighed as she ran her hand through her hair. There was no use in worrying. It was not like she could find out who was behind it or anything.

When it was time to go home, Emma cleared up her desk and picked up her bag. She headed out of the office and down to the parking garage. She was a little bit paranoid as she walked over to her car. Just two days ago, there were big men in ski masks in the garage. She quickly rushed over and got into her dented car.

Emma arrived home about half an hour later. “I’m home,” she announced as she walked into the living room. Her sisters and her mother were sitting in there watching telenovelas.

“Hey sweetie. How was work?” her mother greeted her.

“It was fine,” Emma replied as she threw herself onto the sofa.

“I guess it was tiring,” said Mia.

“Did you bring any chocolate?” Cynthia asked.

“Cynthia, leave your sister alone,” said their mother.

“What did I do wrong?”

“You’re always asking her for something. Let her breathe.”

Emma chuckled. “It’s fine. I’ll bring you chocolate tomorrow,” she said.

“You need to save your money to fix your car,” said Mia.

“I can’t believe that someone just drove into your car and got away with it,” said her mother.

“Don’t worry about it. I’m just grateful that I wasn’t in the car at the time,” Emma replied. She felt awful about having to lie to her family but she had to. If they knew what had happened in the parking garage at work, they would not want her working for the sheikh. She wasn’t ready to give up the job. The money was too good. Speaking of which, she was getting paid later that week and she couldn’t wait. The electric bill was due and Cynthia had been begging her to buy her new shoes.

“I will pay for the repair of your car,” said Emma’s mother.

“That’s sweet, Mom, but you don’t have to do that. It’s just a dent.” Emma rose to her feet. “The car still works fine.” She smiled and headed out of the room. She didn’t want her mom to waste money on her car. They had bills to pay.

Things never used to be so desperate for them. Her father passed when Cynthia was just four years old. Their mother managed to work and keep things afloat just until recently when she was laid off.

Emma was sitting at her desk when Kiro walked in through the automatic doors with two bodyguards. It was still new for her to see him without his regular bodyguard. The sheikh was dressed in a navy-blue suit. It fit his athletic body perfectly.

“Good afternoon, sheikh,” Emma greeted him as he approached her desk.

“Afternoon,” he replied. He put a small black velvet box on her desk.

“Um.” Emma looked at the box and then back at the sheikh.

“Take it,” he said and headed to the elevator. Emma was in confusion. She wondered what was in the box, and why the sheikh was giving it to her without saying anything about it. She picked up the box and then opened it. There was a car key in the box.

“What in the world,” Emma mumbled. She took the car key and ran after the sheikh. She managed to catch the elevator just before the doors closed. Kiro looked at her with his eyebrows raised.

“What is it?” he asked her. She opened her palm and held out the key to him.

“Um, this.”

“It’s a car key.”
