“He was in a meeting with our enemies,” Adrian grits out.

“Yes. A meeting I fucking authorized. Now let him go!”

Considering he can’t ignore a command from the Don, Adrian is forced to step away from Lukas. Camila rushes forward to her husband, helping him to his feet. She places a tender hand on his jaw. Then she’s looking back at Nico.

“He has to answer for what he did,” he says angrily.

“No,” Nico replies easily. “Adrian reacted appropriately given what he knows and the position he’s in.”

“He killed some important men today,” Camila retorts.

“We’ll figure out how to make amends. Take your husband and go, Camila. Now.”

She huffs out a breath, and after one last look at her uncle, who is standing still, she walks away.

“What the hell is going on here?” Adrian asks as soon as he’s gone. “You let that traitor walk? And what do you mean by you authorized the meeting?”

“Calm down, Adrian,” Nico tells him.

“We would all like to know what is happening, Ramirez,” Sebastian finally speaks up. “You knew there was a traitor in our midst, and it would appear you’ve been cavorting with him.”

Cavorting’s a strong word. Nico’s expression doesn’t betray his displeasure, however.

“I’m working on an alliance with the Bratva, and Lukas is going to help with that,” he states.

“Like hell he is,” Adrian snarls.

Nico fixes him with a hard look. “Why don’t you take a walk to calm down? Return in ten minutes and we’ll convene a meeting of the table to discuss this.”

Adrian’s jaw is clenched but he does manage a small nod before walking away, heading inside the house. I place a hand on Nico’s arm.

“I’ll go after him,” I state.

He looks like he’s about to tell me not to, but I offer him a small smile.

“It’ll be fine. I just want to talk to him, Nico.”

Plus, Adrian would never hurt me.

“Fine, go,” he says with a sigh.

I walk in the direction Adrian did, and find him in one of the smaller living rooms, balancing his dagger on a finger. He arches an eyebrow as I walk in.

“Why hello there, Mrs. Ramirez,” he greets me, smiling without teeth. “You look radiant. I take it the honeymoon went well.”

I perch on the edge of the desk in the room. “Actually, yes, it did.”

“That’s good. I’m happy for you. Unfortunately, your fake husband and I are about to have a lot of problems.”

My eyes widen. How does he know our marriage is fake?

“Oh, you don’t have to look so surprised, Aurora. I make it my business to know everything. Don’t worry, I couldn’t give a fuck about your weird relationship with Nicolas. Especially not right now.”

“Why are you so angry?” I ask.

Nico didn’t give me the details. He just said Adrian’s family has always had a problem with the Russian mafia.

“Why am I so angry?” he muses. “It has to do with the fact that someone in the fucking Bratva was responsible for my mother’s murder, and ‘til today, I had no idea who they are or why they did so. The entire organization is protecting those responsible. Which means they get to bear the full brunt of my ire together. And now what? Nicolas wants to form an alliance with them? I can assure you that’s not going to happen.”
