“Where would we even go?” she finally asks.

“Anywhere you want, mi vida.”

She thinks about it for a while before carefully answering.

“I want to go to the beach house. That’s assuming Valerio hasn’t sold it after all this time.”

The beach house she’s referring to is one her family owns that is located about an hour from here in a small town called Winnetka. Aurora and her sister used to spend all their summers there when they were younger. I accompanied her there a few times myself. It holds a lot of memories. Happy ones mostly. I guess it makes sense that she’d like to revisit it.

“Of course he didn’t sell it. Actually, it’s yours now, same as a couple of other properties here and in Italy. I was waiting for you to ask about his will. He left a lot to you and your sister.”

She takes that in for a couple of seconds.

“Okay,” she nods. “We can talk about that later. But are you sure we can just leave? You’re still the Don.”

“The world won’t burn if I’m away for a couple of days, Aurora.”

“What are you planning?” she asks, her expression suspicious. “You never do anything without an ulterior motive.”

“Maybe I just want to do this one thing for you.”

“Or maybe you’re planning something,” she retorts. “You’re lucky I want to find out what it is.”

I smirk. “So, you’ll go with me?”

She sighs softly. “Only because I think it would be nice to get away for a while. Although I wish I’d be getting better company.”

“I’ll be on my best behavior, I promise.”

She eyes me distrustfully. “That’s even more worrying. I prefer it when you’re a jerk.”

“Because you’re a masochist that gets off on me being mean to you?” I ask teasingly.

“No, because it’s easier to remember how much I hate you.”

“Duly noted, sweetheart. I’ll ask Vlad to make preparations. We’ll leave soon,” I tell her before straightening. “Shall we, Mrs. Ramirez?” I ask, offering her my arm.

She groans before linking her arm through mine. “Do not call me that.”

I lead her toward the ballroom.

“And Nico?”

“Mm?”

“I’ll be taking you up on that dance you mentioned earlier.”

I smile “No problem, sweetheart.”

CHAPTER 17

AURORA

The farther we get away from the city, the more at ease and relaxed I feel. Nico and I are alone in the car. He’s driving. I’m a happy passenger princess, enjoying the breeze on my face and the clean air. I’m definitely not going to admit this to him, but this was actually a pretty good idea.

My favorite place to be is at the beach, but in the past ten years I haven’t had the opportunity to visit, mostly because I’ve been busy with one thing or the other. Nico would not have been my first choice for a companion, but he’ll have to do. This is my first vacation in a while, and I’m not about to let anything ruin it.

“Hey, isn’t that the store where Lucia got that nosebleed and was so sure she had a concussion?” Nico asks, pointing out the window as we drive down a street in town.
