“There’s nothing to protect me from, zio. Nico and I are in love,” I state, making sure to shoot the man in question a loving look.

Nico offers me a smile in return. My uncle’s expression turns to one of disgust. This is actually much more fun than I thought it was going to be.

“You seriously expect me to believe this show?” he questions.

“Believe whatever you wish.”

“Your father would be rolling in his grave at the thought of his daughter getting married to a man like him,” he says, pointing at Nico.

I adjust in my seat, trying to control my anger.

“Good thing he’s in his grave then, and will therefore be unable to stop us,” I retort.

Out of the corner of my eye, I see Nico smile, although he tries to hide it.

“Valerio may be dead. But I am alive, and I will stop you.”

Nico speaks up then. “And how do you expect to do that?”

“Your wedding will not be taking place,” Sebastian says with certainty. “Not if I have anything to say about it.”

“What could you possibly have to say?” Nico drawls.

“I’ll be bringing it up for discussion at the table. As well as what punishment will be fit for your claims that you’ll be the next Don. Decisions will be made then and I’ll ensure that you lose your seat at that table.”

Nico smirks. “All right then. Do whatever you want.”

Sebastian grows even angrier when he realizes he’s failed to draw any reaction from him. His hands ball into fists as he stands to his feet.

“You won’t get you want, Ramirez.”

“Bye, Seb.”

Once he’s gone, I turn to Nico with a raised eyebrow.

“A dog without teeth is still going to want to bite,” I state.

“Wise words, mi vida. But Sebastian’s breed is one that would have never been able to land a bite on me, even with teeth.”

“You know it’s your fault he hates you so much.”

From the day they met, Nico has gone out of his way to antagonize and show disrespect to Sebastian. The only person he’s truly ever respected is my father.

“I just have that effect on people,” he states, getting to his feet. “Finish your meal. I need to go and take care of something in the city. I’ll see you in the morning for breakfast.”

I decide to mention something that just might piss him off.

“Oh right. I forgot to mention to you that I’m going to work tomorrow.”

Nico goes still. I take a bite of my steak and chew slowly, waiting.

“No, you’re not,” he says after several seconds pass. “We had a deal. You said you’d take a break from work for the next four months.”

“No, you said so. I went home, thought about it, and decided it was a bullshit idea and I’m not going along with it. I can’t just leave my company. It’s my responsibility.”

“Aurora,” he grits out. “I’m trying to keep you safe.”

“Don’t bother. I’ve been doing a good job keeping myself safe these past few years.”
