It’s too charming.

Brittany suggested that I should use him as a means to get over Cameron, but—newsflash—it’s not working.

“I just want to say that I’m so happy to see you on the team, Nila.” Cierra extends her hand to me.

I take it, giving her a firm, businesslike shake.

“Thank you. I’m happy to be here.” I force a smile, trying to ignore the pang in my chest that reminds me I’m lying.

Ever since setting foot back in this city last week, everything has felt wrong.

I thought the feeling would wear off, but it hasn’t.

Cierra continues to make her rounds, her slender figure standing taller than most of the men in the room. She’s gorgeous and intelligent. It’s a bombshell combination.

“I think I made a good choice.” Garrett steps in beside me, nudging my arm. “She’s the best of the best. I think the two of you will work smoothly together.”

“Of course.” I can work smoothly with just about anyone. It’s just in my nature.

“And I was just wondering.” Garrett lets out a breath that catches my attention. “Are you free tonight?”

My stomach drops—and not in a good way. “Um...”

“I don’t mean it like that,” he says quickly and with a hearty laugh. “There’s a Gala tonight. I know it’s last minute, but I would love for you to join. There’s a lot of people that I can introduce you to.”

“Perfect.” I force another smile. “Can I bring a plus-one?”

He cocks a brow at me. “A plus-one? Are you seeing someone?”

That’s a funny question for a client to ask.

“No,” I answer honestly. “But my best friend would be more than happy to come along.”

“The brunette in your most recent Instagram post?”

I don’t show any emotion at him snooping on my Instagram profile. “Yeah, that’s her. I’ll make sure she comes appropriately dressed.”

“Wonderful. I’d love to meet her.”

I’m sure she’d love to meet you, too.

“Perfect,” I say, instantly having the urge to text her and make sure she can make it. I don’t know what she has going on, but I have a good feeling she’ll cancel just about anything to go. We’ve talked every day since that first night out, and honestly, it’s been nice to have someone. I’ve been making a conscious effort to try to let people in more.

I think she’s the only person keeping me sane.

For the rest of the meeting, I stand in the corner of the room, taking a few shots with my camera to add to their social media channels. It’s nothing special, but the images will serve their purpose for content. I listen to Garrett drone on about the finances, and then Cierra takes over and discusses a game plan for our next steps.

I think the company will be successful, and I’ve got a great social media strategy in place for their launch, but honestly, I don’t register a single thing anyone says. I don’t care. I don’t care about business.

Right now, I’m craving connection.

And as much as I’m trying to block Cameron out of my mind…

I still miss him.

“Say cheese,” Brittany chirps as she holds up her phone to take a selfie with me.

I force a smile.
