“I know you prevented more deaths.” Kesser squeezed her mom’s hand. “For what that’s worth.”

“That’s worth everything.” Her mom’s eyes glowed. “You know that.”

She did know that.

It had been the two of them for most of Kesser’s lifespan. They were a team.

When her mom had campaigned to increase ship safety, Kesser had helped her. It took solar cycles of hard work, but they were finally successful.

Those changes had decreased the possibility other beings would die like her dad had. And it had started her mom on her path to planet leadership.

“Why is the transport slowing?” Her mom frowned as she gazed out a portal.

“I arranged to be dropped off at Talley’s.” It had been a long planet rotation, and Kesser was tired. She preferred to continue home. But her best friend required help with a task she refused to talk about over their devices. “You said you didn’t need me for the credit managers’ nourishment-sharing event you have scheduled next.”

“Chattering with Talley will be much more interesting for you than attending that.” Her mom didn’t enjoy the meetings with the planet’s credit managers either. She’d shared with Kesser that it was a necessary but unexciting occurrence. “I was hoping we’d have a few more moments.”

The sadness in her mom’s voice increased Kesser’s guilt. “We’ll have sunrise nourishment together.” They always shared that time.

Her busy mom made that a priority.

“You can hitch a ride with me to your role also.” Her mom’s unhappiness faded. “I’m going in that direction.”

Kesser’s role consisted of organizing databases at an academy. It earned her credits, and it gave her the flexibility the daughter of a planet’s leader needed. But it lacked…meaning. She doubted the universe would change at all if her role was eliminated.

“I won’t say no to a shared ride.” She grinned

The transport stopped.

“Have fun at your credit-managers’ event.” Kesser opened the door.

“Don’t ask the impossible from me.” Her mom shook her head.

Kesser laughed and exited the small ship.

Talley, being unmerged as Kesser was, lived in her dad’s domicile. He was the planet’s Minister of Defense, and the structure resembled a military compound.

It was surrounded by high walls. Every expanse of the area was covered with simulated stone. The domicile was massive, had bars on its portals, and there were guards everywhere.

Kesser approached the gate.

Two males in body armor stood in front of it. They clutched long guns.

That was unnecessary. Syndiculous 5 was no longer at war with anyone. There was no danger to any of the inhabitants present.

“Identification, being.” Dave, the tallest guard, frowned down at her.

“Dave, you know who I am.” She extracted her handheld from her pocket and bumped it against the male’s device. “I’m the being who gifted you an entire container of specially crafted nourishment bars during our last harvest celebration.”

She was also the daughter of Syndiculous 5’s leader. Everyone recognized her.

“I’m following protocol.” Dave looked around them and lowered his voice “Those nourishment bars were delicious. My partner won’t stop talking about them.”

Kesser lifted onto the toes of her boots and whispered, “I thought she’d like them.”

Jorge, the other guard, cleared his throat.

The tips of Dave’s ears turned red. “You have access.”
