“Alright.”

She gently opens the door and I slip into the bathroom.

The noise from outside grows fainter in here. I hear a thud as Beatrice leaves.

My heart’s pounding so loudly that I can hear its beat. Beatrice would be in danger if Father found out she hid me here. I’d hate watching her suffer because of me. She’s done enough for the past few years.

I cover my ears when the gunshot sounds draw closer. It sounds like it’s coming from inside now. My palms pressed on my ears do nothing much to suppress the yells. I’m disturbed by the number of shots I hear close by. I recognize a voice.

Beatrice.

I barge out of the bathroom, hearing her screaming. I’m not letting her do anything stupid just to protect me. The door slams shut as I hurriedly run out of the room. My eyes spot a dead body by the passageway. His blood spills on the tiled floor.

Ah fuck!

“Beatrice?”

Another yell comes from inside. I walk in the direction of the sound to find Beatrice and Gabriele held at gunpoint by one of my father’s men. Dead bodies fill the space.

“Beatrice!”

She turns to me, shaking her head when she sees me. A man is holding her hands behind her back.

“No, Adriana.”

“Look who we have here. Boss would be so happy we finally found you.”

The man talking doesn’t have a stain on his well-ironed white shirt and gray pants.

“Leave them alone. It’s me you want.”

Beatrice’s eyes are swollen from crying. Gabriele is stained with blood from wounds on his face. It looks like they beat him up. Father has no fucking empathy, even for his own son-in-law.

“Take her.”

A short man with a pistol and knife sheathed on his pants walks to grab me.

“It’s not you they want,” Beatrice yells.

Shit.

I push my shoulders forward, fighting myself free from his grip but it’s too tight.

“Now where were we, Gabriele?”

“Leave both of them out of this, fica (pussy).”

My father’s man hits Gabriele in the head with the back of his gun. Gabriele’s head swings in the air as the men hold his arms tighter. Beatrice screams while watching her husband get beaten.

The hatred in me towards Father propels to a higher level, seeing how much less he cares about us. About the people I love. If I had the chance to kill him, I wouldn’t hesitate.

“My men and I won’t help you strike the Malgeri. They’ve done nothing wrong to us,” Gabriele says. Blood drips from the corner of his mouth.

“You are of no use to us then.” He points his gun at Gabriele and pulls the trigger.

I can’t hear my screams as they are overshadowed by Beatrice’s. But I can tell I’m yelling.

Gabriele’s body goes numb and falls to the ground. A bullet in his chest. I’m struggling to believe the sight before me. Beatrice’s voice is in my head. I quiver with my eyes bulging out.
