A picture falls from inside. I pick it up from the ground and stare at it with my jaw slightly dropped.

Picking up the envelope, I empty its contents on the bed. More pictures fall out along with a pistol.

I scatter the pictures on the bed, scanning through each. They are the same people at different places, being intimate.

I pick up a picture of my father kissing another woman—Daniel’s mother. A few have some heads torn off the picture, with only Father’s image still there.

How could I have missed this? Was she Father’s mistress? Who kept this envelope here? Does Daniel know about any of this?

Different questions flood my head with a new wave of anger. I still can’t believe my eyes as I spot another photo of my father in a car with Daniel’s mother. Another of both of them was captured in a hug.

All of the pictures have a red circle on Daniel’s mother. I turn the back of the picture, staring in disbelief. It has dates written on the back.

They were all before Daniel’s mother died. I recognize the writing. It’s Mother’s.

I turn to stare at the gun on the bed. My eyes widen in shock at the realization of what might have happened. I shake my head in disbelief. Daniel would hate me if he ever found out.

Mother killed her.

Chapter fourteen

Adriana

“Are you sure no one came around?” This is the fifth time I have asked Beatrice.

It’s been five days now and I’ve heard nothing from Alessandro. Only Daniel had reached out yesterday with flowers and a note. But the man to whom I’m supposed to be married hasn’t bothered showing up.

“Are you expecting someone?”

I stare at my wrists. The nurse had changed the bandages this morning. I try to slow my breath while thinking about him. “It’s not important,” I mutter.

Beatrice sits beside me on the bed. Both our legs dangle in the air as she joins me to sit. “Alessandro?”

I keep mute, not wanting to admit it out loud.

“You can’t get mad at him after he got shot twice.”

I know he’s alright. Otherwise, Daniel would have said something in the note.

“Yeah, sure.” I reluctantly agree with her to end the conversation. She doesn’t know Alessandro like I do.

“I don’t know how long it will take to still prove to the doctor that I’m not fully fine yet.”

Beatrice stares at the door and her eyes meet with one of Father’s men. We are whispering words.

“Just act it out for a few more days. Gabriele and I are still searching for the perfect place for you.”

The confused look of Father’s guard staring at us, whispering, makes us erupt in laughter. He has a funny expression while trying to eavesdrop.

Beatrice stands up from beside me and drops into her seat in front of me.

“I have to tell you something.” I adjust on the bed and fall to my back to avoid the stares of the guards outside.

“Father did it. He was the one who tried to kill Alessandro,” I whisper.

Beatrice arches closer to me, shocked. “What? But he had just agreed to the deal. How sure of this are you?”

“It was Yuri who shot him. Yuri wouldn’t have made a move without Father’s orders.”
