The hospital room was washed in a soft glow of afternoon sunlight filtering through the curtains. In the center of it all, Paige sits, cradling our newborn son in her arms, a radiant smile gracing her lips as she gazes down at the tiny bundle of joy nestled against her chest. I watch her, feeling my heart swell with a happiness I never knew existed.

Watching my son come into the world had been the most amazing experience of my life. Paige was the strongest, most beautiful woman in the entire world as far as I was concerned. She took my breath away. She gave so much of herself to give our son life. I felt like I owed her my life. And that’s exactly what I planned to give her.

I had gone out to get some food from her favorite restaurant, wanting to treat her to a special meal to celebrate the arrival of our son. The aroma of the cheeseburger fills the room as I enter, carrying a bag of delicious delights in one hand and a bouquet of flowers in the other. Her eyes light up with delight as she sees me. I can't help but feel a surge of pride at the sight of her happiness.

“Hi,” I whisper.

“Hi.”

“Hungry?”

She nods. “I am so hungry.”

I set the food down on the bedside table and carefully take our son from her arms, cradling him gently against my chest as I press a tender kiss to his forehead. He stirs slightly in his sleep but doesn't wake. I love that he already knows he’s safe in my arms. While holding him in one arm, I pick up the bag of food and hand it to her.

“Extra pickles,” I tell her. “And ranch dressing.”

“You’re my hero,” she smiles.

“No, you’re my hero. Look at this precious little thing. You made this. You brought him into this world. Twelve hours of labor. I am in awe of your strength.”

She takes a big bite of the cheeseburger. I watch her with adoration. While she eats, I take a minute to stare at our son. The tiny bundle was so perfect. His lips twitch, pursing like he’s sucking. I can’t help but smile at him. He’s got a head full of black hair and as far as I’m concerned, he’s got a pretty strong grip.

“He’s pretty amazing, huh?” she says.

I look up and smile. “That’s an understatement.”

After she finishes eating, I gently place our son back in the bassinet, watching as he sleeps for a few seconds.

“Do you want some water?” I ask her.

She shakes her head. “I’m good.”

With our son asleep for the moment, I decide to take my moment. I pull the ring from my pocket.

“I would get on one knee, but I’m not sure you could see me,” I tell her.

“What?” she asks with confusion.

I take her hand in mine and look into her eyes. “I was going to wait and do this, but I can’t wait.”

“What is it?” she asks with concern.

I take a deep breath. “I love you. You know that. The last ten months have been the best of my life. You have made me beyond happy. I know our relationship has been fast and furious, but I wouldn’t change a thing. You came into my life like a whirlwind and turned everything upside down in the best possible way. I can't imagine my life without you, without our son. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I will always fight for you. For our son. Paige, will you marry me?”

Tears well up in her eyes as she stares at the ring in disbelief. She looks from the ring to me, her lips trembling with emotion.

“Yes,” she breathes out, her voice barely above a whisper. “Yes, of course, I will marry you.”

I slide the ring onto her finger, feeling a rush of joy as she throws her arms around me in a tight embrace. I hold her close, feeling like the luckiest man alive. We kiss, sealing our commitment to each other as our son sleeps in his bassinet, unaware of the love and happiness that surrounds him.

We hold each other close. I know that I am the luckiest man alive, blessed beyond measure to have found true love in the form of this extraordinary woman.

“Get some rest,” I kiss her forehead. “If he fusses, I’ll handle it. Unless he needs your boobs.”

She grins. “Deal.”

I pull the blanket up around her and pull the curtains closed. I take a seat in the chair, close to the basinet. I feel like I’m standing guard over the two most important people in the world.
