“Most of it,” I chuckle. “It’s a long story. I’ll tell you all the details when I have more time. But I’m back. Not back in LA, but I am alive. I will send you money for the rent and we’ll have to talk about packing my stuff up. I can’t go back there. I’ve lived this long with my stuff, I can probably survive without it.”

“Are you not coming back because you’re in trouble with the law?”

I laugh. “I don’t think so. My old employer is probably pretty upset with me, but I don’t think I did anything illegal.”

“Someone questioned me shortly after you left, they said you kidnapped a woman,” he says. “They didn’t seem like cops. What in the world did you get mixed up in?”

“I didn’t kidnap her. I love her. She’s having my baby. We’re going to live in Miami. Those guys won’t be bothering you again. You should visit us.”

“Did you say she’s having your baby?”

I laugh. “Yes, yes, I did. I have to go but I’ll call you again and fill you in. This is my number, call me when you can.”

“You better call me again,” he says.

“I will. It was good to talk to you.”

Chapter nineteen

Paige

Istep out of the shower, feeling light and carefree. For the first time since all of this started, I saw an end to my nightmare. Hunter and I could be together without fear. At least that’s what I hoped. I was sure my father had disowned me. That was really the best thing that could happen to me. I just wanted to be able to live the life that made me happy. That was Hunter. Hunter was the man I loved. I wanted to be with him to raise our baby together.

Hunter was just pulling the mac and cheese off the stove when I walked into the kitchen.

“Feel better?” Hunter asks, leaning over to give me a kiss on the cheek.

“So much better. Did you call your friend?”

“I did.”

“And?”

He laughs. “Yeah, I don’t think I realized the fallout of walking away from my life.”

I wrinkle my nose. “I’m sorry.”

“Not your fault. It was my choice. Let’s eat.”

Our meal was meager, but I didn’t mind. There was little that could make me happier. We had nothing, but it didn’t matter. Things were going to be better. We could both get better jobs and rebuild the lives we walked away from.

After we ate, we went straight to bed. He pulls me close, snuggling me against him. “I’m so glad you’re here. There were a couple of hours that left me wondering if I would ever see you again. I felt like you were lost to me forever. It nearly killed me.”

“I’m sorry you were worried. I knew you were going to panic. I’m sorry you went through that.”

“I’m sorry you went through it.”

I roll to my back and look at him in the dim light of the room. “But it’s over. We’re not going to look back. We’re going to keep moving forward. I know there’s always a chance he might come back, but I don’t think they will. Adrian doesn’t want me. My father knows I am not valuable to him anymore. He’s not going to waste time on me.”

“You are very valuable to me,” he whispers before lowering his mouth to mine. His lips are like a balm, igniting a fire within me. It’s a kiss of reassurance, a promise of togetherness, and an affirmation of love. "You're everything to me," he murmurs against my lips.

"Everything?" I tease, my fingers lightly drifting over his bare chest.

"Everything, Paige. You, the baby..." he trails off.

He kisses me again.

I draw circles on his chest while he cradles me closer. He traces a hand down my arm, his fingers caressing my skin sending shivers up and down my spine. There's a soft smile on his lips when I meet his gaze.
