Hunter lets out a sigh, running his hand through his hair. “You know, the world isn’t as easy as you might think it is.”

“I am well aware of that, Hunter,” I respond tersely. “I have thought this through.”

“How did they know you were here?” he asks.

I sigh. “I don’t know.”

“And where are you planning to go now?”

“I have a plan,” I reiterate.

For a moment, there's silence between us as Hunter processes my words. “I’m supposed to fly the jet back to LA later tonight,” he says.

“I’ll drop you off at the next rest stop. I’m sure you’ll be able to find your own way back.”

He shakes his head. “I can’t.”

“I’m not going back there. They might be waiting for me.”

“Tell me your plan,” he says with a sigh.

“Why? I don’t know you. I’m not going to trust you.”

Hunter leans back in his seat, crossing his arms over his chest. "I've already helped you escape a situation. Doesn't that earn me a little bit of your trust?"

"I don't know. Does it?"

"Depends on your perspective," he replies, a hint of amusement in his voice. "But I think it's better than nothing. I’m the guy that saved you. I would say that takes me out of the enemy category."

“That doesn’t make you a trustworthy friend,” I correct.

While I’m driving, I keep looking in the rearview mirror. I wonder when they are going to reappear. It might not be the worst thing in the world to have an ally.

“I think you’ll learn I’m not a bad guy,” he says quietly. “I think you need someone on your side. At least until you get to where you are going.”

“I plan on being on the road for a couple of days,” I warn. “You said it; you have to get back.”

He goes quiet again. “I think I’ve gone AWOL. I can’t just leave you out here on your own.”

“I’m not a child. Everyone thinks I’m a little girl. I know how to live. I don’t need you or anyone else babysitting me!”

“Woah,” he says. “I’m not saying that you’re incapable. I’m saying you’re one guy against an army. Why don’t I stick with you until we know they are no longer following you? After that, I catch a ride back to LA and hope I can find another job.”

I feel guilty that he’s giving up his current job to help me. That has to mean something, right? He can’t be all that bad. Unless he has ulterior motives.

I whip my head around. “I hope you don’t think this is going to get you in my pants.”

Hunter's laugh is a startling burst of warmth in the car's quiet interior. "I assure you, that's not my priority right now."

I narrow my eyes at him, still unconvinced. "And if it becomes one?"

He raises his hands in mock surrender. "I'm pretty sure we're far from that point, given our current situation. I’m not the kind of guy that gets off on violence. Thank you, but no. Speaking of, what did you do to that poor man?"

“What poor man?”

“The one that couldn’t stand up and seemed to be suffering from a condition I’ve seen before.”

My lips quirk. “It got him away from me.”
