am i insane?

It takes a few minutes for his confirmation to sink into my brain. Did he just tell me he’s an angel? That’s impossible…isn’t it?

“Thank you again, Lucy, for the tea and for helping me. I must go.” Zaph closes his wings, wincing with movement.

“I hate to sound like a broken record, but I’m afraid the only way you’re getting out of here is by flying. The roads are frozen, at least for the next few days.”

He runs a hand through his hair. “Flying isn’t an option until my wings heal.” He moves toward a window. “Are you sure I was alone?”

“Positive. I’d remember if there were two of you.” I cross my arms over my chest. “No one ever comes out here. If you had to crash land somewhere, you chose the best possible location.” I’m not sure why I’m working so hard to keep him from leaving. Maybe it’s because he’s the living representation of my thesis. Just think of the questions he could answer. It would be a bitch to cite, but who cares.

“Someone might come looking for me.”

“Are they…are they like you?”

“Yes.” He turns slightly, stumbling with his movement.

I move to his side. “Let me help you.” I wrap my arm around his tight waist and help him return to the table.

“Maybe a day of recovery will help.” He closes his eyes in pain. “If you’re sure I won’t be in the way.”

I snort a laugh. “Well, I’m awfully busy writing the world's worst thesis and counting the exact amount of food to feed my obese dog. Other than that, my schedule is wide open.”

Zaph turns toward my laptop. “A thesis? Are you working on your doctoral degree?”

“Working is the optimal word in that sentence.” I smile.

“What’s the basis of your paper?”

“Are you sure you want to know?”

“If you’d rather not share, I’m not the prying type.”

“I’m writing a thesis on religious beliefs throughout history.” I can’t hide the smile that covers my face. “The irony is hilarious if you ask me.” Zaph doesn’t show any emotion to my admission. “You know, since you’re an angel and you fell onto my land.” I clear my throat.

“Your topic sounds very interesting.”

“Yeah, it’s not.” I stand, moving closer. “Who might come looking for you Zaph?”

He looks down at my question. “My brother.”

“Did you fall?”

Zaph looks up at my words. “I don’t remember.” His face turns serious. “Lucy, for your protection, it’s better for you to know as little as possible. The less you know, the less danger you will be put in.”

“I understand,” I lie. Just a sliver of the knowledge inside his mind could complete ten thesis papers in no time. “How about a meal? I was planning on making chili tonight. Do angels eat chili?”

“Chili sounds nice,” he answers, turning toward my stalker dog who hasn’t left his side. “Bob says that he would like some chili, too.”

I wrinkle my forehead. “What?”

“Your dog, Bob. He wants you to know that he’d like some chili too.”

“He spoke to you?”

Zaph smiles. “He didn’t speak as much as yelled. He wants you to know the dry dog food you feed him tastes like…” he turns toward Bob and laughs. “He doesn’t care for it.”
