“What happens when I die?” My question is no louder than a whisper.

He pauses before answering. “I go to Lilith until you return.”

“What if it takes lifetimes for me to return?”

“Then I’ll wait lifetimes.” He slides a finger under my chin, lifting my eyes even with his. “We’ve been together for an eternity. Lifetimes are only a drop in the bucket.”

……

“Dr. Williams?” a younger woman says, standing at my bedside. “How are you feeling this morning?”

“Good,” I answer. “Who are you?”

She smiles a perfectly white smile. The bright red curls covering her head look like they came from a box rather than natural. “I’m Anna. I’m your nurse.”

“We’ve met before?”

She smiles. “Every day for the past year.”

I stare at the stranger in front of me. “Why don’t I remember you?”

She sighs. “You’ve had a bit of trouble with your memory. That’s why your grandson admitted you with us.” She grabs a picture off a shelf behind me. “This is him. His name is Zaph, and he’s a looker if you ask me.”

I take the picture from her hands. He looks familiar. Coal-black hair hangs gently at his shoulders. He’s wearing a white shirt and black jeans. “I think I remember him.”

Anna smiles. “He’ll be here soon. He comes to visit you every day.”

“He does? Why?”

She takes the picture away. “Because he’s your grandson, and he loves you. Let’s get you dressed and looking gorgeous.”

Anna spends the next half hour, combing my snow-white hair, dressing me in something soft and pink, and adding lip gloss to my dry lips. “Thank you, dear.”

I’m sitting on the edge of the hospital bed when the man from the photo enters the room. He’s just as handsome as he was in the picture Anna showed me. “Hello, my love,” he says with a smile.

“Hello, Zach.”

“Zaph,” he corrects me. “You’re looking especially beautiful today.”

I stare at the man in front of me. “Do I know you?”

He moves closer, holding his hand toward me. “Would you like to take a walk? The weather is beautiful, and you’ve always loved spring.”

“I’d like that, thank you.” I take his hand, and we walk side by side. Beautiful pink flowers are forming on the trees that surround the small pond.

A memory of a chubby dog, running through flowers just like this, fills my mind. I look back at the young man who brought me out here. “Did I have a dog?”

He smiles. “Bob. His name was Bob, and he loved you very much.”

“Bob,” I echo. The name sounds familiar on my tongue. “I think he liked pink flowers.”

Zaph links his fingers through mine. “Lucy, there’s something I need to tell you.”

I look at our joined hands. “Okay,” I whisper.

He looks away, staring over the open water. “Something’s going to happen tonight. I don’t want you to be scared.”

“Scared?”
