I have to get out of here. No matter who wins the fight between them, I’ll be next. Remembering a trick I watched on the internet, I manage to slip one of my feet through my tied-together arms. I’m able to pull the second one through, making my arms connected in front of me.

Behind me, the two angels are matching blows, throwing each other around the room, destroying the small area in the process. Sliding my tied hands toward me, I pull them against my thighs quick and fast. Just like the video, the zip tie breaks, freeing me from their grip.

Lumiel is holding her own against the giant fallen angel. I pray they’re too distracted with each other to notice my movement. I work my way toward the door, trying not to draw attention to myself.

The exact moment my hand touches the doorknob, an arm reaches around my neck, pulling me away. The arm is strong and muscular, telling me who won the fight. Shit. “Let me go, Zephriel.”

“I’m afraid I can’t do that, little one. You’re the bait for my wayward brother.”

“Zaph isn’t going to come for me. Hell, he doesn’t even know where I am.”

Zephriel’s laugh echoes off the concrete. “Humans are so naive. He was your guardian, my dear. He knows precisely where you are at all times.” He pulls me away from the door with nothing more than a slight tug. The strength of his arm feels like a vise against my neck.

“How does that work exactly? He’s not my guardian anymore.” My stalling tactics suck.

“Once connected, always connected,” he answers, pulling me back to the seat I was in moments earlier. “Lilith wants you dead. She also wants my brother to join her. This entire scene is a win-win for me.”

“You suck,” I spew.

He laughs again. “Such harsh words, little one.”

A soft moan comes from the other side of the room. I turn, seeing Lumiel struggling against her damaged body. Her wings are showing and one of them is barely hanging on to her shoulders. She’s injured, but not giving up. “What was it like, having a twin?” I ask the giant angel in front of me, hoping to draw any attention away from Lumiel.

He wrinkles his forehead at my question. “That’s a strange question, Lucinda.”

“Please, call me Lucy.”

Zephriel lifts one side of his mouth higher than the other. “You are quite beautiful. Maybe I’ll have a little fun with you before you die.” He runs his hand down my cheek and neck, stopping at my breast. He cups his hand around me, making my anger boil.

“Don’t touch me!” I yell, pulling away.

“You’re a feisty one. I like that.” He lowers his head toward mine at the same time the metal door to the room rings with sound. “We’ll continue this later,” he warns, putting distance between the two of us.

The sound rings through the room once more. I’m not sure what’s on the other side, but it wants in. “It’s Zaph,” I lie. Truthfully, I have no idea what’s on the other side, but any distraction I can cause helps.

“Good,” he answers. “It’s about time that piece of shit shows up.”

I move away from Zephriel, running into the far corner of the room. Lumiel has gotten to her feet but is barely moving.

“Is that you, little brother?” He yells through the now-damaged door. “I hope it is!”

One last pound echoes off the walls, and the door explodes. Zaph stands on the other side with his wings fully exposed. He’s breathing hard and bleeding from a wound on his forehead. “Where is she?”

“I’m here!” I yell from the corner.

Zaph makes eye contact with me. “Are you alright?” I nod. “Let her go, brother.”

“Lilith is the one you should be making requests to, not me.”

Zaph raises his hand toward me. “We’re getting out of here.”

I run toward the dark-haired guardian angel, only to be stopped halfway by a giant white wing. “Don’t even think about it,” Zephriel warns. He turns back to his brother. “Don’t be dumb. You can’t win against her. Running will only bring death to both of you.”

“I won’t allow that to happen,” Zaph retorts. He steps into the room, allowing me to see the extent of his injuries. Blood is dripping from his wings, and his skin is covered in deep wounds. “I’m not leaving without her.”

“How sweet,” Zephriel retorts. “Puppy love is such a sweet thing.”

Zephriel turns toward me, shoving me into the cement wall behind us. “I’m sorry, dear. It’s time to say goodbye.” I close my eyes in anticipation of what’s about to happen when his grip on me releases and I fall to the ground below.
