My eyes are blurry as I fight to open them. It’s dark and cold, and I’m scared. Did someone call my name?

“Lucy!” I hear my name again. I didn’t imagine that.

“Here.” My voice sounds more like a croak than words. “Here,” I try again.

The passenger door to my Jeep is ripped from the hinges in an instant. I stare through the opening, not sure what’s going on. It takes my eyes and brain a moment to focus enough to realize what I’m seeing. A pair of black wings attached to a half-naked man is on the other side of the missing door. “Zaph?” I whisper toward the creature.

He’s inside the car with his arms wrapped around the two of us seconds later. “I’ve got you,” he whispers. Snow slaps me in the face as we’re pulled from the wreckage and back to the road above. “I’m taking you home.”

My eyes close as the sensation of being lifted into the sky overtakes me. Bob is still tight in my arms as the world around me vanishes.

the truth

My eyes open to the familiar comfort of home. It takes a few minutes to realize I’m not dead and am actually in my house. My lip aches and feels swollen. I want to move, but every muscle in my body aches.

“You’re awake,” a familiar voice says from the corner of my bed.

I turn, finding Zaph sitting in a straight-back chair at my bedside. “How…did you bring me here?”

Sliding to the edge of the chair, he reaches a hand toward mine. Warm fingers gently touch the top of my hand, bringing chill bumps to the surface. “I did. How do you feel?”

I cough. “Like shit.” I sit up quickly as the memories of what happened come crashing in. “Bob?”

Zaph knows what I’m asking. “He’s downstairs. He just ate two bowls of food and attempted to run upstairs without much luck.”

“Two bowls?” I whisper. “He’s supposed to be on a diet.”

“Yeah, he told me. He also told me he was still hungry after the first bowl, and I relented.”

I smile, wincing with the pain it causes in my lip. “Is he okay? Was he hurt?”

“He’s fine. He told me what happened.”

I turn toward my angel savior. “What do you mean?”

“He told me about your visitor.”

I relax backward onto the headboard. “Who was he?”

Zaph stands, moving toward the window. “Zephriel,” he answers. “My twin.”

“Your name is Zaphriel, and you have a twin brother named, Zephriel? Doesn’t that get confusing?”

He laughs. “No. I’m sure you noticed we’re not twins in any physical way.”

“No. He was the exact opposite of you.” I look down at my hands, surprisingly free of any injuries. “He told me to give you a message.”

He turns back toward the bed. “I figured as much. What’s the message?”

“He said they’re waiting and that my life depends on it.”

Zaph’s eyes close. “I’m sorry, Lucy. I never should’ve come here.”

“Do you have your memories?”

He moves back to the chair next to the bed. “Yes. I regained them when my wings healed.”
