“That, you did.”

“I’m so sorry, Ty. I’ve never done anything like that before.”

He smiles warmly. “It’s fine. But now that you’re awake, will you excuse me for a minute? I drank too much water.”

“Yeah, me too. I’ll wait for you to return.”

He smirks, showing the dimples I’ve seen a few times. “We could share.”

Redness instantly covers my face. “I’m not about that life.”

“Too bad,” he mutters, walking toward the center of the plane.

I’ve been propositioned plenty of times, but something about the way Ty just did it is hot. Did he proposition me, or am I in some sort of dreamy bliss? God, I bet my breath smells like death warmed over. I flag down the attendant, asking for a toothbrush and paste. She returns quickly, handing me what I need.

Ty returns, standing in the aisle for me to get out. On the way past, my shoulder rubs against his arm, causing an electrical charge to run the length of my body, starting where we touched. Ty feels it, too. His eyes change from amusement to something I can’t explain.

I continue moving toward the bathroom and feel his eyes on me the entire way. What was that? Did I imagine that? Returning a few minutes later with clean teeth and an empty bladder, Ty stands, stepping back for me to enter. His energy feels different. What felt comfortable before now feels anxious.

I sit, pulling my legs underneath me, still feeling his eyes on me. “Piper?” Turning, I realize he’s leaning toward me.

“Ty?” I echo his tone.

“When you touched me, did you feel something?”

God, this is embarrassing. “Yeah, I felt bad for accidentally touching you without your consent.”

“You know that’s not what I mean. Look at me, Piper.” I turn, facing him, and find it difficult to look him in the eyes,

“What do you want me to say, Ty? Yes, I felt something. Just like all the women you come in contact with on a daily basis.”

“I felt it, too,” he whispers.

“Okay.” I’m not sure what I’m supposed to say. “What does that mean?”

He sighs. “Where are you from?”

“Chicago.” I shrug. “Born and raised.”

“Where is your family from?”

“Chicago,” I repeat.

He sighs. “Where are they really from, Piper?”

“Why does it matter?”

“It matters because I’m not who you think I am. Whatever that was that passed between us means you’re like me.”

I slide away from my seat partner. “Ty, what are you trying to tell me without telling me?”

He closes his eyes. “Who are your parents?”

“They’re dead. They died when I was a baby. I’ve been raised by nannies and trust funds ever since.” Realization hits me like a ton of bricks. “That’s what this is about, isn’t it? You know exactly who I am, and you’re playing the same game as everyone else.” Anger fills me. “You’re no better than all the rest of them. Get in my pants, get into my bank account, and use me.”

“Piper, I’m not after any money. I have enough to last a hundred lifetimes.” He lowers his head as the attendant passes. “There’s a reason you’re going to Norway.”

I sigh. “I told you the truth. I need a getaway, and this popped up on the globe when I gave it a spin.”
