“Where are your bags?”

“Lost. The airline lost everything that I didn’t carry with me.” I surprise myself with how quickly I lied to her face.

“That’s a bummer.”

“Yeah, I agree.” I stretch, pulling my hands high above my head. “I think I’m just going to get some sleep. Did you come over for anything specific?”

“Just checking the apartment,” she answers. Emma moves closer. “Cut the bullshit, Piper. I’m not stupid and neither are you.”

“What are you talking about, Emma?”

“You know what I’m talking about.”

I stretch my hands high above my head once more, hoping my acting job will do the trick. “Emma, I’m worn out. Can we have this conversation tomorrow?”

She moves faster than I can track. In an instant, she’s standing in front of me. “No,” she answers simply. “We’re having this conversation now.”

Taking a deep breath, I face the woman who was my best friend only hours ago. Pulling on the short training I received from Ty, I picture Emma covered in ice. I release a breath, finding her covered in water.

“Oh, my god. Is that the best you can do?” She continues moving closer. “How’d you find out? All these years, you’ve had no clue. Just a poor little rich girl stuck with mommy and daddy’s money. You haven’t even been gone forty-eight hours, and you come back trying to perform jotunn magic?”

“Where is it, Emma?”

“Ah, there you go.” She smirks. “Where’s what, Piper?”

“Where’s Brimir’s crystal?”

Emma claps her hands. “I’m impressed. It’s safe and in the hands of who it should be. You see, Piper. You’re nothing more than a hybrid with no real powers. Do you think your father is the only one to get freaky with a human?” She laughs, using a laugh I’ve never heard from her before. “You’re nothing more than a one-night stand between a god and a whore.”

She’s behind me in a split second, holding my arms behind my back and wrapping them in what feels like a zip tie. A hood is pulled over my eyes as she drags me toward the elevator. “Emma, don’t do this. I know there’s good inside of you.”

“Shut up, bitch.”

The sound of the elevator dings through the hood as she drags me through the lobby and into an awaiting car. “We’re taking her to the compound.” Emma’s words are the last I hear before something sharp is inserted into my neck, and I leave the world around me.

CHAPTER 7

Brimir’s Stone

My eyes open to complete blackness. I’m sitting. My arms and legs are bound. “Hello?” I try to stand and realize something is tied around my waist. “Isn’t this a little much?” I yell toward no one.

“You’re awake,” a familiar voice sounds from across the room.

“What the hell, Emma?”

She laughs. “Look at you. Gone for two days, and you’re already cursing. I would say I was proud of you, but honestly, I don’t care.”

“Let me out of here.”

“I’m afraid I can’t do that. You know too much.”

“I don’t know shit.”

She sets something metallic down and applauds loudly. “Two words in less than thirty seconds. My girl is growing up.”

Footsteps move toward me, and the scent of her signature perfume fills my nose. The hood is ripped off my head, temporarily blinding me with the bright fluorescent lighting in the room. “Where am I?’

“Chicago,” she answers with a sneer.
