“Pardon my confusion, sir. Didn’t you just get home from America?” Ty looks up, giving the man a look. “Yes, sir. I’ll get the jet ready.”

“Thank you.” Ty turns toward me. “Grab a few things. We need to be off the ground in thirty minutes.”

I don’t question him. Moving quickly to my room, I grab a few essentials for the long plane trip halfway across the globe. Less than ten minutes later, we’re in the car, heading back to the airport. Alex pulls into a secluded runway away from the main airport. Sitting on the tarmac is a modern jet, ready to load. The moment we climb aboard, a younger man greets us and takes our bags.

“Get us off the ground immediately,” Ty orders. The young man shoves our bags in an overhead compartment and sits in a seat toward the front, away from the two of us. Seconds later, the jet is taxiing and lifting into the air.

“Are you going to tell me what the rush is about? You’re not telling me something.”

Ty sighs. “If you have that crystal in your home, you’re not the only one who knows about it.”

I huff a laugh. “That’s where you’re wrong. I only have one friend. No one else comes into the penthouse.”

“Let’s hope you’re right.” He turns toward me. “We both should get some sleep. I don’t know what’s going to happen when we get there.”

He wraps an arm around my shoulders protectively, pulling me close to his side. “Everything’s going to be okay, Piper. I promise.”

I lay my head on his shoulder, feeling the pressure of his on top of mine, and fall asleep in the arms of the only man I’ve ever trusted.

CHAPTER 6

Emma

I have no idea what time it is when Ty shifts his arm, pulling it from behind me. “We’re almost there,” he whispers in my ear.

“Did I sleep the entire flight again?”

“Yes, but in your defense, private jets can fly faster speeds than commercial airliners. What took twelve hours before, only took ten.”

“Yeah, that doesn’t make me feel better.”

“We’re landing in Chicago in thirty minutes, Mr. Johnson,” the flight attendant announces as he passes our seats. “There will be a car waiting on the tarmac to take you to your destination.”

“Thank you, Nathan.” Ty dismisses the man with his words.

“What is our destination?”

“Your penthouse. We need to get that stone and get it safely back to Norway.”

I turn, facing him completely. “You realize that stone’s been in my penthouse for years, and nothing’s ever happened to it.? Why the rush now?”

“Because you’re not there to protect it.”

“Protect it? I have no real power. Even if I do, I don’t know how to control it.”

“Either way, I’m not taking the chance.” He kisses me on the forehead, eliciting several sensations that aren’t appropriate for an audience.

True to Nathan’s word, the jet is on the ground thirty minutes later. Ty pulls me gently toward an awaiting SUV.

“413 East Peachtree,” I shout the address toward the driver as soon as we’re inside. Seconds later, we’re speeding away from the airport and down familiar streets toward my home.

We arrive in record time. “Stay behind me,” Ty warns before pulling me from the SUV. I’m right on his heels as we enter the lobby.

“Miss Erickson?” Howard comes from behind the desk. “I didn’t expect you back so soon.”

I hug my doorman before stepping back. “Howard, this is…”

“John,” Ty interrupts. “John Frost.”
