“He was a primordial being,” I whisper. “Ty?” I turn back toward the crystal. “I have that stone in my penthouse.”

“What do you mean?”

“It and a golden clock are the only items that remain of my parents. Everything was destroyed after their deaths. The one I have is larger than this one but nearly identical.”

Ty steps away with a confused look on his face. “That’s impossible. The true stone was destroyed millennia ago.”

“Then I have its replica in my penthouse in Chicago.”

“If you have the stone, that would mean…” he doesn’t finish his sentence.

“Brimir is my father,” I fill in the blank.

Suddenly aware of every sound on the street, every passing car, Ty grabs my arm and turns me away from everything. “We have to get out of here.”

“Why? What’s wrong?”

“Not here, Piper. Please, trust me.”

I follow him back to the building and into the only apartment inside the facade. His complete change of character angers me. Once we’re inside, I pull away from his grip.

“Are you going to tell me what’s going on?”

Ty pours himself a glass of whiskey. “I’m sorry, Piper.” He drinks the glass in one gulp.

“I understand Brimir was a primordial being, but what’s the big deal?”

He pours another glass. “The big deal is you’re not just an ice giant. You’re half primordial being.”

“Okay?”

“You are the most powerful creature on earth. If knowledge of your existence gets out, they will stop at nothing to kill you and get control of the crystal.”

“They? The humans that hunt ice giants?”

“Yes. Even I can’t protect you if they discover your true identity.”

Ty turns, filling his glass once more. “No more drink, Ty.” He ignores me, filling his glass once more. Between the lack of communication and the way he’s acting, I feel the pressure begin to build behind my eyes. I stare at the glass he’s holding, imagining it exploding in his hand.

Seconds later, something happens. Instead of shattering into a million pieces, the glass turns into roaring flames, scorching him on contact.

“What the hell? Piper?”

Tears instantly fill my eyes. “I’m sorry, Ty. Did I do that?”

He moves toward me, wrapping his arms around me and pulling me close. “No, I’m sorry, Piper. I’m horrible at explaining this stuff. You’d think as old as I am, I’d be able to use words better.”

I smirk at his admission. “What does that mean?”

“It means we need to get that crystal back here, where it’s safe.”

“What about me?” I ask, not sure what my future holds.

“We’re going to figure it out together. First, we have to get to Chicago.” He steps away, pushing a button on the wall. Out of nowhere, Alex appears.

“Yes, sir?”

“Get the jet ready. We’re heading to America.”
