I don’t remember my father, but from the pictures I’ve seen of him, he was young and handsome. “My father was twenty-nine when he died, and my mother followed a few years later.”

“Your father and I were the last two. Now it’s just me.”

Emma was right. I’m going to die in Norway. Not from freezing to death but from being sold to the highest bidder. “Yeah, I’m sorry about that. I’m ready to go.”

“Piper, I can’t let you do that. It’s for your safety.”

“Says the kidnapper to the kidnappee.”

“I’m not kidnapping you.

“Fuck you, Ty.” I stomp away, proud of my correct usage of words that aren’t allowed in my vocabulary. Emma would be proud.

“Your room is through those doors.” He nods toward a set of wooden panels that blends into the background of the room. If he hadn’t pointed, I never would’ve known they were doors.

I slide the door and continue stomping my way down a hallway. I have no clue where I’m going until I find the room with the only open door and my luggage inside.

The room was decorated by someone with exquisite taste. The pale blue bedding is accented by stark white pillows and decor. Two of my favorite colors. Pulling my phone out, I realize I have ten missed calls and countless text messages from Emma.

I send a quick message. She responds seconds later.

I’m alive.

Piper, WTH? Do you know how close I was to sending the police or whatever the hell they’re called there?

I’m sorry, I’m fine. I can’t talk right now. I’ll call when I can.

My phone continues to buzz as I pull out my laptop and begin researching the jotunn. Any normal person would’ve called the police by now, but apparently, I’m not normal. Instead, I Google the information Ty told me earlier.

I find nothing more than a few Wikipedia pages dedicated to the jotunn and Farbauti. Nothing mentions anything different from what I already know.

I spend the next few hours poring over obscure pages until I find something that I recognize. My father’s name. The article doesn’t mention much other than his name and the date of his death. “Why is his name listed on a page about Jotunn?”

On cue, a soft knock on my door grabs my attention. “Go away.”

“Piper, I know you’re hungry.”

“Nope. I’m good. I’ve got a piece of gum that will hold me over.”

I hear the soft echo of a laugh through the door. “You technically haven’t eaten since yesterday.”

My stomach growls with his words.

“Give me a chance to explain better. I did a horrible job earlier.”

“You think?” I yell through the heavy door.

“You have my word that nothing will happen to you.”

Against my better judgment, I open the door. Ty’s wearing a pair of sweatpants and a fitted t-shirt along with the charm that had women nearly stripping in front of him on the trip.

“I’m not scared of you.”

“Good,” he answers. “I don’t want you to be.”

“Just food? No horny men, waiting to bid on me?”

Ty smiles, showing the dimples I remember from earlier. “No men waiting to bid.”
