Marcel—who the Blood Moon wolves had unanimously supported as Alpha—happily agreed to the terms Alpha Wynn and Alpha Declan set.
It was similar to other alliances with the addition of a trading clause. In exchange for resources, Blood Moon would act as a liaison between our pack and other unsanctioned packs.
Alpha Wynn hoped we could establish an unstoppable force by utilizing all the talent shifters had to offer. Bowen was right. The Council had spent the majority of their existence creating barriers between us. They divided us so they could conquer, and now, we were mending the rift.
We had all suffered in one way or another. Sanctioned packs, unsanctioned packs, and witches alike were mere pawns in the Council’s grand scheme.
Alpha Wynn enacted his own display of good faith by equipping each member of Blood Moon with a rucksack filled with supplies to take home.
Alpha Marcel designated four shifters who would coordinate with the Silver Fang and Hidden Creek Enforcers to deliver information between the three packs. These same shifters would return in a few days with Lancel and Leon. Thankfully, they’d been unharmed in the Blood Moon dungeons.
Before Alpha Marcel left, Myla asked about the women who had helped her escape, and he told her all was well with them. He promised to arrange a call once things settled. The relief had sapped Myla’s remaining strength, and I held her as she thanked him.
Korren and his medical staff were working overtime to treat the major wounds sustained by those who had been engaged in the battle. Shifters with mild injuries were directed back to their dens to heal. It was one of the perks of being a shifter—our advanced molecular biology repaired wounds at ten times the rate of other species.
Bowen and I met up with Theron, Gentry, and a much healthier-looking Myla.
“I didn’t see that coming,” Gentry said.
“Me either. But honestly, I’m relieved to know unsanctioned packs aren’t all bad. I think operating under that assumption is what gave the Council power. They made us too suspicious of others, so it was easy to think of them all as one corrupt group,” I said.
“Do you think other unsanctioned packs will work with us?” Theron asked.
“I’d say so. If things are as bad as they claim, then those packs will want change as well,” Bowen said.
“How are you feeling?” I asked Myla.
“Much better. My shoulder feels brand new,” she said.
I frowned. “This doesn’t mean you’re off the hook. What the hell were you doing out here?”
She straightened like she was preparing for a fight. “Blythe had an idea I thought would work. We didn’t think it was worth it to risk so many lives when Alpha Kane just wanted me. So, we decided to use me as bait. I know it was risky, but it was successful.”
“Yeah, it worked. This time.” I moved down to her level, holding her gaze. “What would have happened if Blythe had arrived too late? If she didn’t get there at all?”
She winced, but I couldn’t let up. The terror I experienced when her panic and pain poured through our bond was something I never wanted to feel again. I couldn’t lose her, and today, I almost had.
“You didn’t even contact us to let us know what you were doing. We could have helped, or at least backed you up.”
“Would you have?” she challenged. “Would you have let me walk into danger without trying to alter my choice or insert yourself on my behalf?”
I was silent.
“Would you?” she pressed.
“No,” I admitted. “I would have done everything in my power to make sure you were safe.”
“That’s why I didn’t tell you. You couldn’t keep me safe from this. I had to walk into danger for it to work, and you know what? It did.”
“It fucking killed me.”
She cupped my cheek, the golden flecks in her eyes shining. “I know. I’m sorry.”
“Promise us you’ll never do that again,” Theron said.
“I promise,” she replied.
“And we’ll do our best not to overlook your decisions. You’re the most precious thing in the world to us. It’ll take time for our protective instincts to settle,” Gentry added.
