He looked absolutely shocked. “You don’t?”

“Not really. Obviously you wanted to do something nice for me and I admit it’s—they’re—not an ordinary gift, but I don’t understand.”

“Why would I get two miniature donkeys if I didn’t love you and trust you and want you to be with me? I got them for you, not for me. Although, I admit they’re pretty lovable.” He stroked Buster’s head. “This is supposed to show you that I believe we can work it out.”

Unable to think of a response, she stared at him.

“Marry me, Dana. I love you and I want to be with you. Always.”

Torn between tears and laughter, Dana said, “Only you would ask me to marry you with not one but two miniature donkeys between us.”

“I can fix that.” He came around the animals and pulled her into his arms. “Dana DeLong, I love you. Will you marry me?” he asked, and kissed her.

“Oh, Levi.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“Yes. Yes, I’ll marry you, Levi.”

There was no more talking but lots of kissing until Lady wedged her nose in between them, demanding to be petted.

“Let’s get married soon,” Levi said.

“All right. How soon?”

“This weekend.”

“This weekend? How? That’s too soon.”

“Did you want a big wedding?”

“No. Friends and family are fine with me.”

“Good. Then we’ll have it here. This coming weekend.”

“My head is whirling.”

“I bet I can make it spin more,” Levi said with a grin.

“Oh, I have no doubt about that.”

He scooped her into his arms and carried her to the gate. The donkeys followed but Levi looked at them and said, “Sorry. You’re not invited. We’ll be back later. Much later.”

“Much later,” Dana agreed and kissed him.

Chapter Twenty-One

Three months later

“I have an idea,” Levi said one day a few months after they were married.

“An invention idea?”

“No. A new nonprofit organization idea.”

“You mean Asher’s We’ve Got Your Back?” Asher had begun implementing his plan of uniting shelter pets in need with veterans shortly after he moved into his own place. He’d come remarkably far in a short time though it was still in the very early stages.

“No, although it will tie in with We’ve Got Your Back.”
