“That sneaky bastard!” Furious, I struck the table with the palm of my hand, causing the plate to shake on impact.

“Easy there, feisty pants,” he said calmly, and I found his words rather hypocritical.

“You're one to talk,” I said under my breath.

“What's that supposed to mean?” he asked with something that resembled a frown.

“I want him dead, Nik …”

“Ashley—”

“—Don't try to be reasonable all of a sudden, Nik. You're a criminal—hell, you're the boss of the Bratva, you kill people for a living. Don't go soft on me now.”

He looked at me with a beam and said, “That's the problem with you, Ashley. You never listen to me.” he continued, “I was going to offer to kill him for you if you want me to. Or I could harm him discreetly. Like you said, I have the power to do so.” He leaned closer. “So, tell me, how would you like to have his head served on a plate on your next visit?”

The way he spoke so casually about beheading a man made me nauseous. I thought I had the courage to be evil, I thought I had it in me, but he just proved to me that I didn't.

I was just daddy's little girl.

“I'll think about it and get back to you,” I replied, hiding my disapproval of his methods, “Thank you for finding the man though, how much for the job?”

“Oh, you've paid for it already.” He winked at me.

There he is, the jerk!

“I'm not your whore, Nikolai!” I snapped at him, enraged by his demeaning remark. “You narcissistic prick. Who the hell do you think you are, treating women like trash? Is this how you treat the other women, is it? You egocentric son of a…”

…bitch!

I swallowed the last part of my statement. It’s wiser to keep my mouth shut and not upset him now, especially not in my current state.

He had been watching me calmly as I ranted, “Why are you so upset, my malyshka? Shall I remind you how much you enjoyed it?” His sarcasm was infuriating.

“Because you wronged me, don't you get it? Why do I even bother, it's to be expected from someone like you.”

He stood up quietly and came over to me with an expressionless face leaving me unsure of his feelings. I couldn't foresee what he'd do next. He dipped down to my ears and placed his hand on my stomach.

“Am I not being wronged too?” he whispered to me.

“I … I don't understand,” I stuttered.

“I think you do, Ashley,” he straightened and leaned on the table. His eyes as dark as the forest, boring right into me. “How long did you plan on keeping this from me?” He motioned to my belly.

Fuck! He knows.

I knew better than to deny it, so I just blurted it out. “You don't have to worry about me or the kid. I'll take care of it.”

“Take care of it?” he roared, “Define 'take care of it’.”

I was silent and avoided eye contact. Pretending that his voice did not send me into a pit of horror.

“If anything happens to that child inside you—my child,” he began his warning, inching closer to my face, “I'll make damn sure that you and your whole family experience what it's like to have me as an enemy. I'll destroy you from the inside out and make sure you never have a moment's peace. You'll be on the run for the rest of your lives and never stop because you know I'm always one step behind you, waiting to destroy you.”

His words pierced my heart like a knife. Nikolai wasn't one to bluff or make empty threats. I knew that much.

Sick to my stomach, I stood up and looked at him, terrified, when he asked. “Were you going to tell me?”

I mustered the courage to reply honestly and gritted my teeth. “No.” I shook my head, “I was never going to tell you because you're a criminal and my kid deserves better than to be fathered by a criminal.”
